Marianne Halbert is my Woman In Horror today! Marianne is one interesting lady. She writes great psychological horror, my favorite kind, and endears me to her stories by the fact she leaves a lot to the imagination, not dumbing down the reader. Her readers are intelligent enough to choose her fantastic books and she wants to leave that as is. Over-description can rob a reader of imagination. Suspense is where it's at. She prefers supernatural horror to real-life horror. Marianne gets plenty of that at her job being the Criminal Justice Director at NAMI, Indiana, and from being involved with Crisis Intervention Teams.
Marianne Halbert spends too much time pondering the things that go bump in the night. She grew up in the heartland devouring mysteries and horror, and loves to read and write anything quirky, spooky, downright creepy, surprising or moving. While she abhores gore for gore's sake, she thrills on creating tension, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, and shades-of-gray characters that make you think of them years after the pages have closed. Her stories have appeared in numerous anthologies and magazines on the cutting edge of speculative fiction. Keep your flashlight and blanket handy, and keep up with her at http://halbertfiction.webs.com
I believe the best book to acquaint yourself with Marianne's mastery at the craft would be WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CREEPY. Why? This is a short story collection with an eclectic array of genres and genre mixes. She is definitely not a stuck in a rut author.
Some mystery...some sci fi...some horror...all dark.
As you hover between wakefulness and wandering back to your dreams, a man struggles to prove he’s in control of his own destiny, while a psychiatric patient proclaims he is the new dawn of mankind. As you shuffle to the coffee pot, revenge already sits cold on the table, and the plot for a ghostly mass murder is brewing. So drink your coffee. Open your eyes. It’s time to wake up.
