John Zacherle was a true master. He was around for so long and did so many things that it seems impossible he is no longer with us. He passed last month at the age of 98.

When I was in grammar and High School, he was a cult hero. Everyone loved him. Known as the Cool Ghoul, he headed up Shock theater, Disk-O-Teen, Chiller Theater, and Zacherley at Large. He played a wizard on Captain Kangaroo. And this is a mere teaser of all his accomplishments. Check out the links above and find out tons more.

John Zacherle was instrumental in my developing a love of horror. More so then most horror authors, he brought something special to his horror table. His feast was one that not only had monsters seated at the banquet, but horror fans as well. John was an expansive, pleasant man who made you feel welcome. Some of his on-air antics were over-the-top hilarious. His humanity always showed through, even in the midst of horrific scenes of terror being shown on-air.

There was no one else quite like him. There will never be anyone who could take his place. He was that great.

Rest in peace, John Zacherle. Your fans miss you.
