FINDING POE - SPECIAL EDITION - BY LEIGH M. LANE!

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V815GVI
Leigh M. Lane has a special edition of Finding Poe! This is a super book. I heartily recommend it to all lovers of Edgar Allan Poe and to all lovers of horror tales.

Book Description

March 25, 2015
Finding Poe is a riddle to be solved, and this edition caters to those who feel up to the task. If you’re a Poe fan, you’ll already know he was the father of the deductive detective story. Many scholars will argue that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series was inspired by Poe’s Detective Dupin stories.

This book asks the reader to assume the hat of the deductive detective. Throughout the text, there are numerous clues to direct the reader toward an alternate speculation about Poe’s untimely death. Before you set out to solve the riddle, however, you must first find the question….

About the story: When reality and fiction collide, there's no telling what horrors might ensue.

In the wake of her husband's haunted death, Karina must sift through the cryptic clues left behind in order to solve the mystery behind his suicide--all of which point back to the elusive author, Edgar Allan Poe.

Karina soon finds that reality, dream, and nightmare have become fused into one as she journeys from a haunted lighthouse in New England to Baltimore, where the only man who might know the answers to her many questions resides.

But will she find her answers before insanity rips her grip on reality for good? Might a man she's never met hold the only key to a truth more shocking than even she could have imagined?

Finding Poe was a 2013 EPIC Awards finalist in Horror.

"Atmospheric, lush, and lyrical, Leigh M. Lane's Finding Poe is a haunting Gothic novel which will delight anyone familiar with the works of Edgar Allan Poe, as well as anyone who enjoys an evocative and classic tale of terror." --horror/mystery author Dana Fredsti.

From Leigh:

Hi all: I've just released a special edition of FINDING POE, one that caters directly to the Poe fans out there. Not only does this edition provide hints for those who failed to solve the puzzle, but it also contains internal hyperlinks to each of the titles and descriptions of the Poe stories/poems Karina passes through, which in turn offer external hyperlinks to the works in full.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!!! March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Karina is in her own personal hell. Forced to leave her home & social status because of a scandal, her husband, Brantley, relocates them to an abandoned lighthouse in New England. She soon starts seeing things, horrific things, & her husband is on the brink of madness. After his untimely death, she finds a letter address to Mr. Poe, & makes it her personal mission to see to it that the letter gets delivered. Spectacularly written, this is a tale of horror, madness, fear, hope, love & betrayal. Horrific, magnificent, fantastic, bizarre & beautiful, Leigh has taken us to the very edge of what we perceive as insanity. It brings to mind the old Memorex commercial, "Is it live, or is it Memorex?". Has Karina gone completely mad, or are things more malevolent than they appear? A must read for any horror fan, a book that makes you think, and makes you question your own sanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Unique March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Leigh M. Lane has managed to create a unique tale that involves many elements of stories and poems written by Edgar Allan Poe including The Black Cat, A Descent into the Maelstrom, Masque of the Red Death, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, The Raven, The Lighthouse and A Dream Within a Dream.

Brilliant tale about Karina, a noble born woman, who's husband moves her away from everything she has ever known to live in an isolated lighthouse. While there, Karina starts seeing things and her husband descends into madness. Upon his death, Karina finds a letter addressed to Mr. Poe and sets out on a journey to deliver this last piece of correspondence to a mysterious man she has never met....or has she?

KENRA DANIELS - WOMAN IN HORROR!

Kenra Daniels is my Woman In Horror today! Kenra is a super author as well as a great person. The one book of Kenra's I definitely have to spot light is Safe Heart (Blood Dragon). This book has weredragons and vampires in it together. Add in a weredragon Enforcer and some humans used as food, mainly by the vampires because weredragons tastes are superior to those of vampires. In the minds of the weredragons anyway. An unexpected love develops between the two species which could threaten to undermine the truce between them. This tale rocks with horror, love, humor, and impossible situations made possible because of the deft pen wielded by the skilled author who Kenra is. This is a genre blending tale that I heartily recommend. Personally, besides the hot erotic scenes, I love the weredragons. This novel is a classic!

Book Description

October 12, 2012
Assigned to rescue a vampire kidnapped by humans determined to exterminate them, a weredragon Enforcer falls in love. Will betrayal keep them apart?

Can the pursuit of true love overcome the fear of society’s rejection and exile? Vampire Jaden Beayer thinks so. When she is kidnapped and tortured by humans, her government sends weredragon Enforcer Kiellen Henley to find her. After her recovery, Jaden convinces Kiellen to help her track down the humans responsible for her torture and exact revenge on them. The problem is, Jaden feels Kiellen is the missing ingredient for her complete recovery. Kiellen believes she has mistaken gratitude for attraction, and despite his overpowering need, he rejects her attempts at seduction.

As they face violence and betrayal from unexpected sources, Jaden’s quest for revenge becomes one for justice. Kiellen’s resistance evolves into acceptance and love. Jaden wants forever with Kiellen, but he’s realistic. They simply can’t be together because they are enemies. Weredragons and vampires have always been at war, and a relationship between Kiellen and Jaden could even endanger the fragile centuries-long truce.

When Jaden is finally safe and Kiellen’s name has been cleared, Kiellen says goodbye, leaving Jaden devastated and himself dangerously heart broken. Will Jaden ever be able to help Kiellen overcome his fears of prejudice and exile, and fulfill their love, making her his forever? Or will their love spark open warfare and send them both to the death penalty?

***

The Background:

Today's weredragons are the modern descendants of an alien species that arrived on Earth during the infancy of humankind. These highly intelligent reptiles, with their technological advances, considered themselves THE Apex predator. Humans weren't their preferred prey, being considered unpalatable and too much trouble for too little reward, even if they were the most intelligent, adaptable prey on the planet.

When dragons discovered vampires preying on humans, they couldn't allow the challenge to their superiority go unmet. A long and bloody war erupted between the two predator species, but the war only served to keep both populations under control.

Dragons adapted their chameleon-like ability to take the shapes of other life forms and learned to shape shift into human bodies. The skill allowed dragons to live secretly among humans like the vampires did, but didn't give them a real advantage in the war.

As human populations increased and became organized, they started to hunt dragons and vampires. Most dragons lived the majority of their lives in human form and eventually lost the ability to take on other forms. Around the same time, they began calling themselves 'weredragons' in an attempt to alleviate the brutal, predatory image humans held of them.

Today, vampires and weredragons are still enemies, but a long-term truce is in effect, enforced by the Inter Racial Council. Both continue to live secretly among humans, and only rarely cross paths.

Safe Heart is absolutely a great book. I loved the story line. It isn't your typical love story. Throughout the book there is humor that had me laughing. I love how in one moment, I'm smiling at the banter between the characters and then in the next moment, I'm breathing slower while they are in the midst of a sexual encounter. The characters are a well thought out group. I like the interaction between them. Well written. Great plot. A great add to your tbr list. Definitely recommended.

Safe Heart was a really enjoyable book with well rounded characters and a good story.

The author created a very interesting world. I hope the she writes another Blood Dragon book! I'd love to see one with Erica Langley and Sutherland.

The book has tension, adventure, vampires, shape shifters, and (of course) romance!

Yes, I'd recommend this book to a friend.

As you can see, the reviewers love this great book as well.

Below are some words from Kenra on her Facebook page from last year:

"I believe *everyone* eligible to vote owes it to everyone else to vote. I believe every single elected official should have served in the military, federal elected officials should have min. 4yrs active duty. Personal funds shouldn't be used to campaign. We need strict ethics reforms at all levels of govt to rout out corruption/conflicts of interest. Every single adult American who is capable, physically and/or mentally, should serve the nation in some capacity - military, civil service... Lots of other "radical" beliefs and ideas, too."

I don't know about you, but I see gems of wisdom everywhere in these words. I served in 'Nam and knew many pacifists who were also serving there. They did not carry weapons. They were medics and were some of the bravest men I have ever known. These great soldiers fall into what Kenra desribed above. They served, every bit as much as those of us who carried weapons. Their blood was spilled the same as the rest of us. Two thumbs up from me on what Kenra wrote!

Kenra's Amazon bio:

One half of the Archangels Creed team!! My coauthor, Azure Boone, and I are long time best friends and writing critique partners. Co authoring was a natural progression for us!

I live in rural eastern KY with my very own Romance Novel Hero/Husband. We have one adult daughter, and find ourselves, in our mid-40s, raising her three little boys as she battles physical and mental health issues, as well as addiction. So we're back to diapers and preschool when we were just starting to become accustomed to an empty nest! The only part we'd change is for our daughter to be healthy and more involved, though. The boys are such a joy!

When I'm not riding herd on the boys, or writing, I enjoy cooking, sewing, crafts, gardening, camping, and other things. Horses used to be at the top of that list, but I have health problems that make riding impossible now, and it's still too painful emotionally to be around horses and not able to ride. Maybe someday I can get to the point where I can be near them and not ride, and not feel as if I lost my best friend.

Writing is a lifelong obsession for me instead of recent discovery. The bright side to my chronic illness is that I have enforced periods of limited physical activity, which turns into writing time. I have Fibromyalgia, in addition to an unidentified condition that's causing progressive nerve damage. I take several medications daily, including a narcotic pain reliever to manage the massive pain associated.

Before I became unable to work, I was a Preschool teacher for almost 15 years. Great experience for raising 3 very active little boys :)

My priorities in life are crystal clear. Family first - grandsons, husband, daughter and mother and Azure (best friend, co-author, should have been sisters). Then it's work. Anything related to writing. Everything else comes after that.

I'm happy to be able to write and share my stories with you. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I've enjoyed writing them. If you like any of my books, please consider leaving a review on Amazon.com, Goodreads, or other review site.

Sincerely,
Kenra

Summon Kassern ( Archangels Creed Book 1 )

Book Description

December 31, 2013

12 Warrior Archangels are to be sent to Earth to stop their Fallen Brethren from setting off Armageddon prematurely.

Kassern, the Ruby Warrior, is the first archangel in line to come to Earth. He has a month to get a preacher and a stripper to fall in love and help him become the Holy Warrior needed to fight Satan's abominations.

Devyn, the stripper, needs to save herself and her best friend Karly from a life of prostitution, so when the preacher, Troy, offers escape, she takes a chance on him.

But can Kassern keep them all safe from the demon hordes after them? Especially with the train wreck that is Karly along for the ride? For the Ruby Warrior it’s a piece of cake. Until humanity begins to get under the Archangel’s skin.

About Archangels Creed:

Twelve Archangels. Twelve couples. Twelve months.
Can they create the Holy Warriors needed to prevent the demon-spawned abominations from destroying the world?
Let the Summoning Begin.

Satan has found a loophole in the rules that govern his battle against Good. The Archangel Uriel sends twelve elite Warrior Archangels to Earth on a mission to even the odds against the demon-spawned abominations being produced.

Each Archangel has one month to find two people, unite them in love, and use their union's power to create the Holy Warriors needed to defend the world against Satan's unholy creations. And they have to do it while staying out of the demons' clutches.

But the mission isn't so simple when inheriting Humanity comes with challenges beyond the Archangels' training, and every milestone in the relationships affect the team's strength. Who knew headaches and PMS could be such a pain in the ass?

~ The Archangels Creed series will explore the story of each of the twelve Archangels as they struggle to complete their arm of the overall mission.

As The Creed world and plot evolved, it became so massive, twelve full length novels could never contain it all. So the Supplemental Series novellas, (AKA Bridge Books) were born. The AC Puzzle Pieces will provide in depth understanding of various facets of the Demons' plans and a look inside the minds capable of such aberrations. The AC Close Ups will take you along for the ride as the various couples involved in The Creed work out their individual issues and make the entire group stronger.

Author's Notes:

*This book is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are the product of the authors' imaginations, or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental.
*This book contains detailed scenes of intimacy within committed monogamous relationships.
*We take extensive liberties related to religious dogma and beliefs. This material is not presented in order to cause offense, but to lay the foundation for future parts of the series that will hinge upon this book.
*Finally, we genuinely hope you enjoy reading "Summon Kassern" as much as we enjoyed writing it. At the end of the book, we've included information on our other books and how readers can contact us. We love hearing from readers, so drop us a line!

5.0 out of 5 stars yummy and hawt angels series December 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
OK so I have to start by saying I enjoy Paranormal so I was excited to read one because I have been very busy reading other types of books. I started reading this book Friday night and couldnt put it down!!!! I was so involved with the story line and the characters. Who in their right mind would want to make a celibate preacher's son fall in love with a stripping whore??? and who would buy it??? *raises hand* MEEEE!!!!!
The characters in the storyand the plot: I loved the story line of Troy and Devyn. I also enjoyed the whole premise of the series...Satan finding a loop whole to take over the world.God will send down 12 angels to find a couple and make them fall in love in order to help save the world. They each have 1 month to succeed. Kassern was the first Archangle to try. I felt for all the characters but especailly fell for Devyn. Devyn has been through alot and seen alot yet remained a good person who wants to help her friend. Troy, who is very shelter in comparison to her, feels so bad and wants to rescue her. Kassern and his unsuspecting layd love have a great story line and I was like HELLO Kassern feel free to try and help me outta a bad situation as well!!!
I would totally recommend this book because I thought it was a great begining. The story building was easy to understand except for one part I was a little bit confused.....talking about the Lab and the experiments.....kinda unsure about it but I believe these "creatures" will be part of the bad things that will be chasing the angels who are trying to save the world. So anyway, IF you like Paranormal and if you are looking for some yummy, uper hawt angel "naughty time" then you prolly wanna try these books!!!

Kassern is undoubtedly a work of art. Exceptional to say the least. I started reading and could not stop until the last page. Which left me wanting more. Extremely well written. Very intriguing story. I loved the characters and how they all meshed together perfectly. Sinners, a holy man, angels and demons, what a combination. This is a book that will keep you on edge and make you feel every thing the characters felt. Erotic? Definitely. I loved every thing about this book. I am looking forward to reading 'Summon Dorn'. I highly recommend this book which deserves more than just 5 stars.

Tight Spaces ( Double Dare Club Book 1 )

Book Description

September 13, 2012
"Tight Spaces" has just been rewritten to include the Paranormal element that kept inserting itself during the original writing of the story. As I worked on "Open Door", the second "Double Dare Club" story, the Paranormal became such an integral part of the story, I was forced to edit it into "Tight Spaces".
***
A lonely woman goes dancing with friends to kick the Bad Breakup Anniversary Blues. Her fantasy-man is willing to help, until her lowlife ex ambushes him.

With the first anniversary of the messy break up of a long-term relationship bearing down, Amy has the blues. When her friends suggest an evening at the Double Dare, she reluctantly agrees to go along, wary of the club's reputation as a matchmaker. She doesn't want a new relationship, but it'll be good to spend time with her friends. Besides, how could a nightclub know who would make a good couple?

Seeing Jesse at the Double Dare immediately cheers her up. She's fantasized over him for months. The evening gets more pleasant as they heat up the dance floor. Things go from hot to sizzling, until her ex shows up and confronts Amy in a low blow. Will his interference deter Jesse from continuing what could be the start of something wonderful?

*Note: Tight Spaces is an Erotic Paranormal Romance Novella. It includes graphic depiction of sexual acts between two consenting adults who will be involved in a committed relationship by the end of the book. Tight Spaces is approximately 84 pages, at 25,000 words.*

5.0 out of 5 stars Now That's What I Like! October 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book sizzled! Amy, the heroine, wasn't a slut, just a normal woman who was a little down because the anniversary of a big break up was coming up. Lots of women have been in her shoes, especially with well-meaning friends trying to cheer her up.
The attraction and chemistry between Amy and Jesse hit immediately when they met, and didn't let up. They start out hot and just keep cranking it up. The dance floor scenes are super-hot, but the actual sex scenes burn up the screen.
There's also an interesting plot to go along with all that steam. Amy's ex is a real jerk!

Now that's what I call an erotic encounter that could lead to more. I love the way Kenra gives such detail that you can actually feel yourself in the body of the characters. Well written. Love the characters. The story itself could be compared to any other boy meets girl, boy wants girl, girl wants boy, etc. In my opinion, this short story develops into more than that. A great read for your tbr list. Recommended!!!!

Elizabeth Massie is my Woman In Horror today! Elizabeth has won two Bram Stoker Awards and this is only a small part of the honors foisted upon her.

Amazon Bio:

Elizabeth Massie, a ninth generation Virginian, has been writing professionally since 1984. Most of her works are in the horror genre (Sineater, Hell Gate, Desper Hollow, and more), but she also writes mainstream fiction (Homegrown), media tie ins, educational materials, and poetry. Her first novel, Sineater, won the Bram Stoker Award. Her Tudors novelization (season 3) won the Scribe award. She is currently working on Ameri-Scares (Crossroad Press) a 50 novel series of spooky books for middle grade readers (age 8-12), as well as new novels and short works for adults and a nonfiction book on spirituality and religion. She lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with her husband, well-known illustrator, Cortney Skinner. She likes hiking and geocaching, and can't stand cheese. She foundeded and for more than three years managed the Hand to Hand Vision project (on Facebook) that raised money to help others during these tough economic times. Though she has a home office, she likes to work at Starbucks a couple days a week. There she can feel like part of the human race. And have a chai.

"I write horror. Some people can't understand why, or don't want to. For me it's this - I stare into the darkness to better appreciate the light." Elizabeth Massie

                                                               *    *    *    *

Elizabeth has quite a portfolio. Her first horror short story, "Whittler," was published in The Horror Show in the winter 1984 edition. Others followed, in mags such as Deathrealm, Grue, Footsteps, Gauntlet, Iniquities, The Blood Review, After Hours, The Tome, and many more, as well as anthologies such as Borderlands, Borderlands III, Best New Horror 2, Dead End: City Limits, Women of Darkness, Best New Fantasy and Horror 4, Hottest Blood, New Masterpieces of Horror, Revelations, and many others. Beth's novella, Stephen (Borderlands) was awarded the Bram Stoker Award and was a World Fantasy award finalist.

Elizabeth added horror novels to her repertoire in the early 1990s, and has since published the Bram Stoker-winning Sineater, Welcome Back to the Night, Wire Mesh Mothers, Dark Shadows: Dreams of the Dark (co-authored with Stephen Mark Rainey), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Power of Persuasion, Twisted Branch (as Chris Blaine), and Homeplace. She has also had four story collections published: Southern Discomfort, Shadow Dreams, the extensive The Fear Report, and A Little Magenta Book of Mean Stories. Her bizarre poetry is included in the early 2004 anthology Devil's Wine, along with poems by Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Peter Straub, and more. Her most recent horror novel is DD Murphry, Secret Policeman (co-authored with Alan M. Clark.) She’s also written novelizations for Showtime’s original television series, The Tudors.

Her first comic book, Julie Walker is The Phantom in Race Against Death! was released in Jan. 2010. In 2010, several of her books were released as e-books from Crossroad Press and Necon E-Books — Sineater and The Fear Report. Several other books are slated to be out as e-books in late 2010 — her horror novel Welcome Back to the Night and a brand new mainstream novel, Homegrown. Beth has become a regular contributor of ghost stories to Woodland Press’s series of anthologies set in Appalachia, including Legends of the Mountain State 3, Legends of the Mountain State 4, Specters in Coal Dust, Appalachian Winter Hauntings, and the upcoming as-yet-untitled anthology based in Appalachian superstitions. She is currently working on a new novel and several new short stories.

She also writes historical novels for young adults and middle grade readers. She has said, "There is a great deal of horror in history, so moving from one to the other wasn't that big a step for my creative thought processes. I love the idea of putting my mind back in time to experience what people years ago might have experienced. And damn, but some of that stuff was creepy!" Her works include the Young Founders series, the Daughters of Liberty trilogy, and The Great Chicago Fire: 1871.
On the side, Elizabeth also writes supplementary materials for educational publishers (both fiction and nonfiction) and continues to wield her inky pen and watercolors to create the characters of Skeeryvilletown. In her free time, she likes hiking and camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains, digging through antique stores, traveling roads on which she’s never traveled. She is also an active member of Amnesty International, the human rights organization to which she’s belonged since 1985.
In January 2011 Beth launched and continues to manage Hand to Hand Vision — Fundraising and Sharing With Others. This project, based on Facebook, auctions off quality hand-made items and then gives the money directly to those who could use some help during these tough economic times. In the same year she started and maintains Circle of Caring — Standing Up and Speaking Out Against Bullying, also on Facebook. This ongoing project brings attention to the problem of bullying by sharing information and encouraging people to be active in standing up and speaking out against it. Members receive free Circle of Caring bracelets that represent their willingness to come to the aid of those who are bullied.
Elizabeth still lives in the country in the Shenandoah Valley (a mere four miles from where she was born and next door to her best friend and sister, Barbara Spilman Lawson) with the very diversely talented illustrator Cortney Skinner. She regularly attends Necon in Rhode Island in July, and as of 2012 has been honored with the title "Necon Legend." Hey, ya hang around long enough, right? :) She knits very long scarves because that's all she can knit, and she continues to work on horror novels and short fiction, and educational books and poetry for kids. Her zombie novel, Desper Hollow, will be released in late 2012 from Apex Books and her historical horror novel, Hell Gate, will be released in 2013 from DarkFuse (Delirium Books Publishing.) She is also currently working on her first book-length work of non-fiction which has nothing to do with horror and is way different from her other books. So stay tooned, yuh-all!

Most of the above information came from off of Elizabeth's bio on her website. http://www.elizabethmassie.com/  I suggest that everyone visit her website because it is set up so well! Notice how the pictures and descriptions of her books are so much better than what Amazon has on their site. I absolutely love the Kolchak: The Night Stalker Casebook cover on Elizabeth's website!

A lot of the above came from my Woman In Horror post for Elizabeth last year which, in turn, I took from her website. She has so much happening, in the past and present, and I didn't want anything to fall through the cracks.

Some great books:

Sineater

Book Description

September 15, 2010
According to legend, the sineater is a dark and mysterious figure of the night, condemned to live alone in the woods. He may come out only when a death in the community occurs. As the mourners turn their backs in fear, the sineater devours food from the chests of the dead, thereby absorbing the sins of the departed and freeing the soul to enter heaven. Yet in a small mountain town, the order has been broken. The sineater has a family of his own, even though they must avert their gaze on the rare occasions he visits them. With the violated taboo comes a rash of horrifying events. But does the evil emanate from the sineater, his family, or from an even darker force?

PRAISE FOR SINEATER:

"I gotta tell you ... Sineater is one of the best, most touching, most intense "horror" novels I ever read. I actually cried at the end ... Real tears streaming down my face ... It is S-O-O-O-O good! Read it! Now!" - Rick Hautala, author of Winter Wake, Schoolhouse, Reunion

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This grim, claustral story is about the consequences of a primitive form of Christianity practiced in the mountains of Virginia, the author's home state. The sineater is a man shunned by all, a man whose face should never be seen. He performs the valuable service of absorbing all the sins of each person who dies, by eating ritual food laid out on their corpses. When the sineater's son, Joel, is allowed to attend school, a series of violent omens convinces the fanatic locals that God is punishing them and that Judgment Day is nigh. As Joel searches for the real perpetrator of the crimes, along with other adolescents who reluctantly listen to him, the plot (the weakest part of the book) begins to resemble a wandering sort of whodunit. The focus of the novel, though, is on the well-evoked mood of fear and despair. Elizabeth Massie works her horror effects with an intimate approach, closing in on her characters as if she's trapping them. And her descriptions do justice to the rustic setting, where people live in four-room cabins and honeysuckle winds around the knotty rails of the fences. Sineater won a Bram Stoker Award for First Novel in 1993. Massie also won a Stoker for her novella "Stephen," published in the first Borderlands anthology. As Tom Monteleone writes in Borderlands 3, Massie wields "a subtle power that rips at your emotions with velvet claws." --Fiona Webster

From Publishers Weekly

Winner of England's Bram Stoker Award, Massie's first novel works better as a convincing and original story about the potential horrors of backwoods religious fervor than as a traditional supernatural thriller. Young Joel Barker lives with a special stigma: his father, Avery, is the "sineater," chosen by their Blue Ridge Mountain religious sect to live alone in the woods and bear the sins of the community's dead. Though Joel is universally ostracized, Burke Campbell, the nephew of the sect's leader, Missy Campbell, befriends him in defiance of his aunt, whose mumbo jumbo he despises. When death and mutilation begin to be visited on anyone who has dealings with Joel's family, Missy blames the sineater and mounts a crusade against him and his kin. The two boys set out to stop the sineater and to end the religious madness that is sweeping the town, only to discover that they may be seeking the wrong enemy. Massie's sharp observations and eye for detail bring her characters to life and lend credence to the unfamiliar setting and bizarre plot. But so much is invested in setting the stage that the story line fails to gain momentum; though it's well-organized and the pivotal scenes are gripping, it never takes off in the same way as some other horror novels about rural religious terror, such as Thomas Tryon's Harvest Home or Robert R. McCammon's Mystery Walk . Massie's evident talent puts this well ahead of many other would-be literary debuts but, ironically, horror fans may find that it packs less terror than the average thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and Chilling Horror Novel August 14, 2001

Sineater is truly one of the best horror novels I have ever read. Sineater stands apart from many other novels in the horror genre for two reasons: it is extremely well written and original and the story is based on reality instead of the supernatural. Sineater is based on the traditions of an ancient religious culture set in the back woods of Virginia. The Sineater is a man who is shunned by society because he eats the sin of people who have died in order to free their souls for heaven. Unlike other horror novels that are based on the supernatural (vampires, ghosts, etc.) the sineater is a human, a man with a wife and children. This story is truly fascinating. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an original horror novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! July 22, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Sineater takes place in the remote mountains of Virginia. According to the legend, the sineater is a man that has been banished to the woods. His existence is vital to the local townspeople, however. As the townspeople die, it is his duty to absorb all their sins so they may pass freely into heaven. This is done by eating food that is laid out on the deceased's body. This is part of an elaborate ceremony that takes place after a funeral. The guests of the funeral must turn their backs, for if they catch a glimpse of the Sineater's face they will bear witness to all the sins he is carrying.

The tradition of the sineater goes back for generations. However, the tradition has been violated. The sineater has married and has a family of his own. One of his sons, Joel, is permitted to attend school. His childhood is a bit more difficult than most. The family must fall asleep before their father enters the house or they will face the same fate as those that dare to look at the sineater's face. He is taunted at school and throughout the community by members of a local religious sect. Everyone knows they should avoid the family or face the wrath of the sineater. However, Joel can't help but form relationships with other members of the town. He can't simply ignore the existence of those around him.

Suddenly, violent things begin to happen to members of the town. Missy Campbell, the leader of the religious sect, believes it is God's way of punishing them for interacting with the sineater's family. Joel desperately searches for the real perpetrator and feels obligated to stand up for the father he has never known.

Sineater is without a doubt one of the best horror novels I have read. Very deserving of the Bram Stoker Award recognition, Massie focuses on a tradition and storyline that is realistic rather than supernatural. Religious fanatics like Missy Campbell really do exist in our world. Massie's sharp eye to detail really brings the characters alive. I felt a great deal of sympathy for Joel and the burden that he and his family must bear. Sineater is not only a horror novel but a mystery and coming of age novel as well. The town must face the fact that the traditions it has been following for several generations are archaeic and unfounded.

I was reading Sineater on a road trip too and from my husband's family reunion in NC, and we passed through many a small town. The very detailed setting Massie protrayed made it very easy for me to feel like I was experiencing a part of the small town world detailed in the book. I can't say enough about this highly recommended book!

Warning: not for the faint of heart. There are a few sex scenes and some of the details of the violence that takes place are quite vivid.

I think it's pretty obvious from the reviews above that Elizabeth deserved to win the Bram Stoker Award for this great tale.

This is one of the best Anthologies I've read yet. It is ashame it is falling out of print. Monteleone did a very commendable job editing this one, as I liked more of the stories in this one than in any previous anthology I've read. The best work in the book is "Stephen," the Bram Stoker Award winning Short Story (I actually think they counted it as a Novella) by Elizabeth Massie. Also very good was the ever-wonderful Poppy Z. Brite's "His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood." Yes, that is Brite's most collected story, but this anthology was the first place it appeared. Ed Gorman--an author I've not particularly cared for in the past--also contributed a short piece I thought was wonderful: "The Black Sedan." This is just a few wonderful pieces. Yes, it has a few that aren't worth the reading--most notably Joe R. Lansdale's contribution--but overall this is a great anthology.

Even though the series was published over a decade ago, the ideas presented in each of the stories contained within all the books remains fresh and revolutionary, each deserving a genre of its own for its out-of-the-box originality.

I first got this book back when it was published in 1995, and the memories of its stories, particularly the fear it fed into my heart and mind whilst reading it, not to mention the vividness of the step-by-step detail going into some of the more graphic scenes have lingered in my mind since.

Recently having had a chance to purchase the full anthology through different booksellers at Amazon, I snatched at the opportunity to relive the same stories that had inflicted me as a teenager, as well as experience new ones I had yet to unravel since these books are long out of print.

I am unfortunately unable to say more about the contents of this and the other 3 books, for it is up to the reader to experience the novel trains of thought that were conceived so many years ago, yet still pack the punch of an all-new view on terror beyond the likes of the Twilight Zone story concepts, and are the basis of the new horror ideas we get to see in movies and television today and in the future.

I read this book about a year ago and the stories seriously inspired me into the world of, as the editor, puts it, "HDF" or "horror/dark fantasy". Stories like 'Evelyn Grace' continue to well in my mind as twisted, dark little gems.
The book is deserved of a look. I am no fan of horror but these stories are much better, darker, twisted but quite subtle as well. I have ordered all 4 and keenly await them so I can once more immerse myself in the wonderful little world of "HDF"...

Once more, we have great reviews, and we should. Elizabeth won another Bram Stoker Award for her story Stephen.

Elizabeth obviously has much talent. If it's been done in the world of horror and more, she has done it. If there's an award, she has won it.

Elizabeth Massie is a Woman In Horror!
