Cold As Death is the first in the series The First Chronicle Of Augustus Seton, written by William Meikle.  And, you can get it free right now. My Crystal Ball is not allowing me to know how long this story will remain free, so you better get it now. Just saying.

I see some of you waiting for my Crystal Ball to function properly. Tsk, tsk. Harken unto my words and hit the Buy Now button on Amazon.

The origin story of Augustus Seton, Scottish swordsman, sorcerer and adventurer
5.0 out of 5 stars Another gripping Short October 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Cold as Death brings the forces of Death and Magic together in a furious and chilling encounter, as Augustus Seton battles the Reaper himself to save his oldest friend. Honour and determination are tested to the limits as the price of an ill-advised pact must now be paid. Debts must be settled, and only a magic sword and stout courage can keep Death at bay.

Thick with brooding Scottish atmosphere, the harsh clang of weaponry, and the love of dear comrades - this short story combines Mr Meikle's knack for a ready tale with a character line that pops up in several pieces of his work: all I'll say is, read the truly excellent Concordances of the Red Serpent for much more of the Seton Clan.

When one is young, making promises for a distant future seems easy. When that promise is your soul, that future arrives all to soon.

Augustus Seton and his friend made it and Seton bucks the Grim Reaper when he comes, learning the high cost of that.

Pretty good story.
