Laura J. Hickman is my Woman In Horror today! While it has been a couple years since Laura's last release, I have no doubt that she will be zipping along with some more goodies for us to enjoy real soon. Sometimes real life gets in the way of getting one's stories out.
Laura has moved quite often in her lifetime, having lived in Louisiana, Las Vegas, and now Rhode Island. That means she has been able to draw upon experiences and different people for fodder for her tales. she started coming up with stories at the tender age of two and three. Of course, her parents were the recipients of her stories where they, unfortunately, were cast in a dark light at times. She writes often of lost and broken love and how her characters must fight their way through it.
Laura and I have the same approach to writing. We take hold of an idea and run with out. Sweet! I love that method. I believe it produces a fresh approach to a tale and keeps the flow moving, while providing suspense along the way. If an author's not exactly sure what is going to happen with a story, then the reader will be surprised as well.
Laura's Amazon Bio:
Laura J. Hickman spends her life writing and creating new worlds. She has recently moved to the New England area, but spent the majority of her life in both New Orleans and Las Vegas. She has had stories published in numerous places, including Necon E-books, Pill Hill Press and 6 Sentences.
Her time spent in numerous places has helped her writing grow and has found inspiration in everything from the Florida Beaches, to the haunted streets of the French Quarter to the sin filled casinos of Las Vegas. She has found help with some great readers and a wonderful editor. Laura feels like with the correct support from friends, family and a great editor her writing has improved so much and is still pushing for her goals to be accomplished.

Laura and I are co-authors in fifty shades of decay, a zombie erotica book published by Angelic Knight Press. This is quite an interesting tome, with stories of all kinds of zombies, love, horror, and, of course, erotica. Some of these tales, as you might imagine, are pretty wild and free-swinging. Others are even romantic, in a rather grotesque way you might say. Out With A Bang, Laura's story, has been well received by a number of reviewers. While she does not perceive herself as being a zombie writer, preferring to write about the evils man manifests upon man, she did a great job.
A review of Out With A Bang by Jake Elliot:
‘Out with a Bang’ by Laura J. Hickman was about a sex-addicted Goth girl who fed her mom to the zombies so as to stop her nagging. Once the batteries of her ‘boyfriend’ ran dry, she devises a new plan to get off, a final plan. I loved the voice of this story.

This is quite a collection, and from the review for Out With A Bang, you can see that Laura has quite a vivid imagination.

Though people have been exploring the legend of the vampire for hundreds of years, the female vampire has been largely overlooked...until now. Pill Hill Press proudly presents FEM FANGS, a collection of short stories focused on fanged girls of the night with a taste for human blood and a penchant for power, seduction and terror. Find your favorite turtleneck and sink your teeth into this monster of a collection. You're in store for some long, dark nights filled with beautiful, hungry creatures. The versatility of the vampire myth from a story-telling standpoint is really mind-blowing and on full display in this book. I heard about this short story collection from Jennifer Chambers, author of Undead Ladies Who Lunch, when we met at the Southern Oregon Author and Book Fair. Chambers' story is very short and very clever. I love vampire characters who move confidently in the modern world and make us think twice about our everyday activities, in this case, the Macy's makeup counter. Pattison's story about Van Helsing as divorce lawyer surprised me and his Vamp is delicious. And Lee's story, which opens the collection, delivers a robust Anne Rice patina that made me surprisingly nostalgic for the genuine period gothic tradition. Al in all, a solid collection and makes for great airplane, poolside or late-night easy reading.

A very solid read. Nearly all the authors involved are new to the craft, so a few of the stories do fall flat, but there is such a sheer variety, and for an EXTREMELY fair price (particularly the $5 Kindle version!) that there's really no reason not to pick it up. If even four or five of the 30+ stories appeal to you, then it was worth the price of admission, and most likely you're going to find more than that if you're a fan of vampire fiction in any way. My particular favorites were the stories by F.J.R. Titchenell, which featured one of the charmingly malicious twists I've ever seen; the work by Ray Cluley, which managed to humanize the Brides of Dracula (!) withOUT making them any bit less monstrous and cruel; and 'Night of the Suck' by Jennifer L. Barnes, which gets serious amusement props for somehow managing to make getting shot in the face and waking up in the morgue seem roughly in the ballpark of losing your car keys. But overall, there are plenty of fine short stories in here, and anyone with a taste for vampires should see this book as a solid value.
