KAT YARES - WOMAN IN HORROR!

https://www.facebook.com/kat.yares?fref=ts

http://katyares.blogspot.com/

Kat Yares is my woman In Horror today! She takes the wondrous tales running through her mind from her Smoky Mountains roots and combines them with religious yays and nays - more nays, I believe -, fantasy, thrillers, and horror. But she doesn't stop there. Kat delves into the political climate running rampant at the present time. This is no small feat considering some of these tales were written before what's happening now came to pass. Genetically engineered food? Kat wrote the book on this. You can't pull the wool over Kat's eyes.

In other words, Kat is a thinking person's author, preferring to enlighten her readers about the status quo with her superbly crafted tales. Even in the midst of her most terrifying tales, there is a message, one that is certainly received better than by constant pounding one's ideas into people's heads. Tell it like it is and allow the readers to decipher for themselves. We who write horror are the most honest of authors. The Dark is ever present. It is our duty to write about it.

She is an Indie Author because she is a control freak, and this allows her to control all aspects of her books, from covers, content, and a larger percentage of the pie. Also, she is a screenwriter and Indie movie maker.

Her book Beneath The Tor is especially fascinating. Many of the characters pop up from the New Testament in the Bible. Super stuff! Gotta love it! This is one of her what if tales that I love. Add in The XIII and you have a wonderful duo of superb mind-blowing stories which could very well have happened. These are stand alone books , but I suggest you read them both.

Okay, if you want to read a tale of religion gone wrong and the not so pleasant consequences, read Vengeance Is Mine and shiver with fright. Draw your own conclusions, but I'm sure all of us are aware of extreme religious beliefs doing much more harm than good.

Most of the reviews of Kat's books below are from my friends, people I trust with their opinions. As so happens to be the case, a lot of my Women In Horror are the reviewers.

Kat chooses the books she reads through her online friends. They pretty much share the same preferences in reading, so it is a natural decision.

Kat loves to interact with her fans, so feel free to get in touch with her.  She's waiting to hear from you.

Kat Yares is without a doubt a Woman In Horror!

Kat Yares has been writing fiction her entire adult life. She is an author, screenwriter, indie movie maker and amateur photographer. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous print publications and online. She was first accepted into the Horror Writers Association in 2001 and remains a member today.
Her fiction is primarily in the horror/thriller genres. Unlike many, she writes horror not to gross out or startle her readers, but to make them think. Most of her stories are mind games and deal with mans (or woman's) inhumanity to man (or woman).
Her novella, Vengeance Is Mine, while horror, still strikes a cord for many readers as they can see correlations between the story and what is happening in today's political climate.
Her two novels, Beneath the Tor and The XIII, are both fantasy and thriller and as several readers have written to her, are bound to send her to Hades after she passes.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Kat Yares is an Indie author, screenwriter, movie maker and photographer. Her work has appeared both online and in print. She is a writer that loves to take the 'what-ifs' of life and turn it into a story, entertaining some with her twisted thoughts and possibly even upsetting or offending others. Beneath the Tor is the first of a series of two books - the sequel The XIII takes place over 2000 years after the ending of Beneath the Tor.

5.0 out of 5 stars The other side of the story October 28, 2012

By Terry
Format:Paperback
Kat Yares' novel, Beneath the Tor, is a compelling retelling of the beginnings of Christianity. Her inclusive version recalls many well-known names from the New Testament, adding depth to each one's personality and destiny. She begins the tale at the Isle of Avalon, with the Lady of the Lake, her younger sister, and other priestesses who worship the Goddess as the one true deity. Miriam is an old woman talking to a young woman from the island, having asked her to transcribe her narrative for future generations.

Miriam's life changes dramatically when her father arrives from Jerusalem to reclaim her as his daughter and brings her to live as a hidden servant in his home. Miriam's life-long friend has convinced her father to bring her and keep her until they can be married three years hence. This young priestess of Avalon is scorned as being one from 'the fairies' and is soon in need of a sanctuary, which she finds in a temple of the Goddess Isis.

Her story includes Joseph of Arimathea as her father and his hostile wife and sons, as well as Peter, Paul (Saul), Judas, Barabbas, John, Mary, Joseph, and more. The settings of the story logically include early Rome, Jerusalem, Egypt, Britain, Nazareth and India, and the transports of two thousand years ago: large and small ships, carts, and litters. Household implements such as stones used for grinding wheat to flour, wooden goblets and plates, and pallets for sleep are easily worked into Yares' story.

The roles of men and women are in sharp contrast between the Isle of Avalon and 'the world,' and Miriam learns to adjust as needed to each, for the sake of her children and husband, Jesus (named Yahshua in the story.)

This version from the other side of the lake does change outcomes, character development and history as we've been told; it raises within the reader a sense of possibility. What if it happened this way, and the truth was hidden by those who assumed power through the ages?

The ultimate question left unanswered is, when will the story hidden beneath the Tor of Avalon be found; the prophecy is that it will be discovered when the time is right. How will it impact the distribution of power and influence in the world?

This story leaves a great deal to the imagination, and to the aspirations of many women. Well done, Kat Yares!

About the Author

Currently she is working on screenplay adaptations of several of her shorts and novels. She lives, with her husband and two English Mastiffs, in the Ozark backwoods.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fear Inducing Stories, April 18, 2013
This review is from: Kats Tales - Journeys Into the Velvet Darkness: Revealed Evil (Kindle Edition)
This collection of shorts is in my opinion horror at it's finest. Each story gives you a different level of fear. I think the scariest part is that each story albeit fiction gives you the human monster instead of the monster under the bed. As I read this and the little hairs stood up on the back of my neck ( which happened with almost every story) I began to think, any of the characters in this book could be someone I passed in the grocery store. That are what stays with me most. That the things in this story could happen.
Kat Yares does an outstanding job of reaching into my mind with her words and at times brings my emotions almost to the point where there is no turning back and I know it is either finish reading or drive myself mad wondering what is going to happen next, or in this case in the next story.

If you are the kind of horror fan who likes the feel of that icy chill running up your spine or the goose bumps crawling up your arms as you read then I highly recommend this collection to you.

Vengeance Is Mine by Yares, Kat (Jan 24, 2012)

Book Description

January 24, 2012
As the small, religious community ruled by the sadistic Brother Joseph Jones braces for a coming ice storm, a battered, beaten Macie Jones hovers between life and death. Cooter James, a former POW, discovers Macie’s freezing body and must make a decision: try to save the woman he has found or continue to ignore the happenings in the village below and maintain his hermit like existence.

His decision made, Macie lies comatose in Cooter’s cabin and discovers that she has opened the veil between the living and dead of the brutal, patriarchal community. Through her, the women and children that suffered before her have found a way to repay their own brand of vengeance on the men who treated them so brutally in the name of God.

In the dreamtime, Macie must make her own decision: help the women with their plans of revenge or try to prevent any further death and pain.

This novella contains graphic violence and would be rated "R" if it were a motion picture.

______________

Kat Yares has a distinct feel for her characters and she brings them to life in a way that evokes sympathy and concern and a genuine desire to need to know what happens next. In VENGEANCE IS MINE, Yares takes us inside a warped community where cruelty is carried out in the name of God, and you will be rooting for vengeance from page one--you will not be disappointed. Yares will take you to dark places--get ready for quite a ride. Read VENGEANCE IS MINE today." --J.T. Warren, author of BLOOD MOUNTAIN

The XIII by Yares, Kat (Jan 12, 2014)

Book Description

January 12, 2014
For over two thousand years, the patriarchal heads of thirteen families have ruled the world from the shadows. When adopted Maria Sanchez marries the wealthy, good looking Joshua Christenson III, she has no idea of who he really is or the ancestry of their child she carries. As the new generation of the thirteen take their places at the table - they have no idea that one in their own midst will seek to destroy them all.

As Maria attempts to understand what is happening in the world and why; the weaker link of the thirteen attempts to gain the power that he so desperately desires.

Although a standalone thriller, The XIII picks up 2000 years after the story told in Kat Yares' Beneath the Tor. A page turner that fits the description of The Da Vinci Code meets The Illuminati. Although first penned several years ago, the themes in this story are front page news today.
4.0 out of 5 stars what a tangled web! December 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ms Yares is able to take facts and blend them into a fictional story so well you are unsure what is real and what is not.
Based on true events, this books gives an alternative reason behind the plots.
As the tale of plotting, intrigue, revenge and abuse between a group of 13 men takes off; the bitterness and destruction is gripping.
The climatic ending was amazing, but as with all good reads leaves you wanting more!
(if you enjoyed Beneath the Tor you will love this... and vice versa!)

5.0 out of 5 stars not exploded, nuked! August 31, 2012

WOW where to start with this review - this gripped me from the start, held me down and splattered me into submission.
A blast of an introduction on the turning of a vampire. Explode the myth? I think Kat Yares has nuked it!
Sharply written, so tense it gave no room for emotion, leaving you as devoid as the new Vamp.
This left me in wide-eyed shock and relief as the "new man" saunters off into the moon light!

My first novella by this author and blimey I feel a little dazed and confused, but ready for more.

JENNIFER THOMAS- WOMAN IN HORROR!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A2FFC9D26O3WAS/ref=cm_cr_pr_auth_rev?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview

Jennifer Thomas is my Woman In Horror today! I'm going to tell you something. Jenn is not the easiest woman to dig material up on. Why? Because she does everything for everyone else and nothing for herself. A prime example is her picture above. It shows her to be a cheerful teddy reading a book. Okay, I guess that's a pretty good characterization of what Jennifer is all about. She is a book reviewer that even other book reviewers respect. And as for the authors whose books she reviews, they know she deeply cares about them as authors and people. She gives them honest reviews, telling it the way she sees it.

I have included a few of her hundreds of reviews below. A number of these are for books I have had the privilege of reading, so I know she gave honest reviews, and I completely agree with them.

Jennifer is very loyal to her friends. On Facebook, you will see her everywhere, spreading the word, adding uplifting messages, and being cheerful to one and all. I have never seen where she has said an unkind word about anyone. In this business, that is not always easy to do. I cannot figure out why some authors think they walk on water because they make some sales, get great reviews, etc. Truth be told, I don't like a lot of their books. I just stay away from their chest thumping and silently laugh to myself. Of course, not every reader will like what I write either. I don't fret over it. Jennifer stays away from the fragmenting part of this as well. She prefers to spend her energy with authors and books she genuinely likes.

Readers have preferences. They wish to read stories falling into the genres, sub genres, and styles they prefer. That is why people like Jenn are so important. Once they find a reviewer they trust, they will seek them out and find out what the reviewer recommends. It's such an important part of publishing. With the big publishers going down the tubes - my opinion, I'm not forcing it on anyone - self-publishing and small Presses are becoming ever more prevalent. However, that means there are many more authors on Amazon and elsewhere. Supporters of these many great authors spread the word so writers are not sitting in a corner with their books, not receiving any notice.

Jenn is a friend of authors; a friend of readers; and a friend of the community of publishing. Jennifer Thomas is a Woman In Horror!

All Sara Lewis wants is for someone to fix her well. When one plumber advises that she just move from the farm where she lives, she finds that is the last thing she wants to do. What she does do is take matters into her own hands and goes down that well herself. She never expected to find a creature who threatens to tear her life apart.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Loves The Good Girls, December 20, 2013
This review is from: Strings (Kindle Edition)
This novel got it's start as a short story which I enjoyed very much. The amount of horror that Allison M. Dickson was able to put into the story made me love it and then to find out that she extended that story into a novel excited me very much. She did more than give the characters more life and depth but she gave the horror a life of it's on as well.

There are 4 main characters in this novel and each has their own story within the pages. The fear, hate, pain and horror that leak from the pages and into your mind as you read this book will stay with you for a long time. There were times while reading this book that I was shocked by the things that I had just read and my emotions got the best of me and I had to set it aside for a few minutes to compose myself to be able to read on. By no means is this a bad thing. I love when a book gets to me in such a way and the flow and time line of this one was wonderful.

The life of a prostitute is not the life Nina had in mind when she left home but when her life took a spin for the worse she ended up at the Weeping Willow. The brothel it's self was a place of many horrors and broken dreams but when Nina is offered a way to pay her debt off and get out of the place of shame for good the opportunity is too good to say no too. She had witnessed with her own eyes what can happen to the girls who venture down the same road she is about to take but there is not only her freedom at stake but a cash load so big that she can't say no. When she finds out why the girls who were sent on this job before her ended up just shadows of themselves it is too late for her to turn back.

At times this novel can be very graphic and the psychological horror is intense at times and that is what made this a great horror read for me.

What a great story! Lori R. Lopez spins a great tale of the Jar Baby.
When a man sells the one thing he is supposed to protect to save the lives of his wife and unborn child he know that he has enabled another to unleash hell and the vengeance of the demon on the world. He must stop the actions that he has allowed to be set in to motion.

All Alice wants to do is check out this comic store that she heard about. The sells man is a little on the creepy side but little does she know that life is about to throw her into an adventure she would never dream of.

Wonderful word flow and outstanding character development.
