Sue Mydliak is my Woman In Horror today! Sue writes some great vampire tales and also sprinkles around collections of other nasty little buggers. While she is primarily recognized from her Birthright(Rosewood Series Book 1) novel, and the sequel The Legacy(Birthright Series) (Volume 2), she has short stories in anthologies and a collection of shorts on her own. Below are the book descriptions and reviews for her novels.
Book DescriptionCandra Rosewood seeks to avenge her parent’s death, but in the end becomes someone she only read about in fictional stories.
In Birthright, Candra has fallen for her parent’s killer, or so it would seem, Kane Smithe, a vampire whose psyche has caught the lovely Miss Rosewood and chooses her for his own human servant. With four markings before she becomes truly his, her life will never be the same again. It is set in Utica, Illinois, present time, where mystery lies deep within the Rosewood family unbeknownst to Candra and unfolds slowly throughout the story.
Head strong, single Candra Rosewood, is at the pinnacle of her life, where things are just beginning to start off beautifully, until news of her parent’s death and no murderer to be found, sends her back home and leaving her to pick up the broken pieces and to start anew, but with one firm resolution, to find the killer herself.
She meets up with Kane the first night she is back home and from there, her life becomes one upheaval to the next. Kane stalks and watches her day and night driving Candra to the point where it becomes too much to handle. Half wishing he would go, the other half needing to see him again driving her to the brink of insanity.
And what about the locket found in her home. Whose did it belong too, and why, when held in her hand send her back to 1817? It is then that things of her past come to haunt her and beacon her to do the right thing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Birthright By Sue Midlock Is A Great Vampire Tale! September 27, 2012
I have known Sue as an artist, and a poet. She is very good with both of these artistic endeavors. And now . . . now she comes before us bearing her gift of story-telling. And a sweet gift it is. Her weaving of this tale within the complexities of the people she has created makes for a delightful read. And I will have to read where she chooses to take me on her journey. "Birthright" is a grand read. You will enjoy the story immensely.
Candra's life has been altered by the one person she always felt safe with . . . her father. Now learning of who she truly is, she must face a life of danger from her family, the Rosewoods, Bound and determined to end the lives of those who wish her dead, she sets out in search of them only to meet up with yet another immortal, Lazar. I find The Legacy, mesmerizing I couldn't put it down! I finished the book in a few hours! I'm hoping there could be a volume 3 in the future?
Besides being a great author, Sue is also an illustrator and artist. My upcoming novel, which will be out in time for Halloween, '68 Buick, will proudly display her cover art. Also, some of my upcoming short stories will have her cover art as well. If I commissioned Sue to do some art for me, there must be a reason for it. She has also done a number of covers for Visionary Press Collaborative.
