M. L. Roos is my Woman In Horror today! I am constantly amazed when I do research for my Women In Horror posts. Sure, I expect to find amazing stories and reviews, but I find so much more. All these women are certainly role models. M.L. takes things to a whole new level. She is brave beyond description and is impassioned to write what she writes in spite of adversity. I won't go into huge detail here. M. L. is certainly more articulate about many things than I could be in this post, but if you go to her website you will find out what I'm talking about. She writes for many of the reasons I do and has some fears which I also share with her. Yet, she writes. She must write.

M. L. has stories within anthologies of publishers I respect very much. Omnium Gatherum, whose chief editor is Kate Jonez, a wonderfully talented editor and author and one of my Women In Horror, and Smart Rhino Publications, headed up by Weldon Burge. To be included in works by these Presses shows how talented M. L. is. They don't accept just anyone.

In Zippered Flesh 2: More Tales of Body Enhancements Gone Bad, M. L. has a Dark story titled After Darque. For some reason, the spelling alone gives me the willies. Gotta have willies.

So, you loved the first ZIPPERED FLESH anthology? Well, here are yet more tales of body enhancements that have gone horribly wrong! Steroids from Hell. Horrendous piercings. Bizarre brain modifications. Obscene amputations. Facial reconstruction. Self-mutilation. Implants. Chilling tales by some of the best horror and suspense writers today, determined to keep you fearful all night (and skittish during the day).

5.0 out of 5 stars Gruesome and bizarre...but excellent! June 2, 2013
I recently had the pleasure of reading several unique anthologies that have been published by presses new to me. One of these presses is Smart Rhino Publications, a small publishing firm based in Delaware. Although they are small, they have some excellent titles. One of these is ZIPPERED FLESH 2: MORE TALES OF BODY ENHANCEMENTS GONE BAD! This collection of stories almost defies normal classification; within these tales are horrors and wonders that you must read to believe. In short, this is one hell of an anthology!

This is definitely not a collection for the faint of heart! But the talent in this book is very impressive. I have to admit that I have never heard of many of these authors, but I definitely want to check out more of their work. Each author brings a unique perspective to the subject matter, making this collection a must-have for fans of horror and bizarre tales.

And `unique' is an excellent way to describe this book. The stories in ZIPPERED FLESH 2 are not traditional by any means; these are true tales of the original. From piercings to amputations, these stories will definitely stick out in your mind long after you have finished them.

One of my favorite stories in the book is "The Sun-snake" by Christine Morgan. In this tale, an ancient civilization "honors" the winner of a competition by transforming him into the Sun-snake, their embodied god. This is achieved by several gruesome surgeries that bind his legs together. I particularly like this story because of the vivid imagery involved. Morgan does an amazing job of conveying the scene and the images from this one will haunt me for a long time.

ZIPPERED FLESH 2 is a big win for me and is a book that definitely needs to be on your horror bookshelf. It is available now, so give it a look.
This is one super anthology. However, it is not for the squeamish.

M. L. has a grand tale called Red in the anthology Death to the Brothers Grimm.

Book Description

September 8, 2012
Fairy tales have been passed down in one form or another for countless generations. They are often our first introduction to that boundless realm we call imagination. Deep within these old stories lie the seeds of our most elemental fears. Death to the Brothers Grimm is a collection of ten re-imagined fairy tales that revels in those dark and hidden horrors. This anthology features works of bizarre fantasy from Bram Stoker Award nominees Jeremy C. Shipp and John Edward Lawson, Wonderland Award nominee Eckhard Gerdes, and the twisted visions of M.L. Roos, Garrett Cook, Kirk Jones, Crysa Leflar, Jessica McHugh, Lee Widener, and Jess Gulbranson.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely mesmerising!!! December 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was hard to put away, so I didn't. I read it straight through with a sense of urgency. The fairy tales contained within are far superior to the ones we all learned as children. If you want cutesy-pootsy, happily ever after, watered down stories, then go read the original Grimm fairy tales. This, however, is much more exciting. I read and scrolled, read and scrolled as fast as my brain would process the info I was taking in. Kudos to the authors for doing such an outstanding job on bringing Death to the Brothers Grimm!
Gotta love Fairy Tales with new spins on them.
Amazon bio:

M.L. Roos was born in Nijmegen, Holland and moved to Canada at an early age. Her love of horror began just as early with a vampire story written in grammar school and later on, a class assignment in law turned into a short story where an entire town disappeared street by street.
M.L. Roos wrote for years without the intention of publishing because, as she tells it, 'if you don't submit anything, no one can tell you, you should be flipping burgers.' And then one day she hit the send button before she could talk herself out of it, submitted a story to a Canadian market and it sold. So did the next one and the one after that.
Deciding to take this writing thing a little more seriously, M.L. Roos joined the Horror Writers Association and sold a few more pieces in the US.
Horror will always be an element in her work, but horror with a twist, an element of surprise, an undercurrent of evil, and bits and pieces taken from real life because people are capable of the most horrific things.

Visit M. L.'s website and find out more about this charming lady.

M. L. Roos is a Woman In Horror!
