Rie Sheridan Rose is my Woman In Horror today! Rie has been writing professionally for over ten years and has published novels, short stories, poetry, and been included in a number of anthologies as well. And, my friends, she is quite involved with Steampunk. Yes, many of you know how much I love Steampunk.

Rie prefers the Victorian Steampunk, where I am more into the Wild West, apocalyptic variety. But Steampunk is Steampunk either way and has the marvelous machines and horrors. Rie loves to think about Jack the Ripper, Lillie Langtry, and Oscar Wilde. Sure can't go wrong there.

She loves writing Fairytales as well and even incorporated one of them into Steampunk. How cool is that? The name of the story is The Seven Year Itch, and it is in the new Terra Mechanica: A Steampunk Anthology. Below is a book description and a review:

Book Description
May 21, 2014
In an alternative past with an unrealized future, trek around the world and beyond in nine separate adventures, in the ships locomotives, and flying machines that power the Steampunk universe.

DOTS, DASHES, AND DECEIT by Jay Barnson: A telegraph operator finds herself displaced by advancing technology but discovers a genius inventor and a young savant with secrets too dangerous to ignore.

THE PROMISE by Michael Cross: In a world ravaged by the unspeakable horrors of war, one soldier moves heaven and earth to keep a promise to his son, and alters the lives of every stranger who helps him along the way.

THE VOYAGE OF VALERIE MCGRATH by Pete Ford: Sent on a desperate mission only she can fulfill, a dedicated researcher discovers the war her government wages against its own people, and the planet they rely upon for survival.

RIPPER BOUND by TC Phillips: With nothing but a brain implant and the force of his will, a talented bounty hunter returns far-flung criminals to justice, but what price will the technology ultimately demand of him?

DR. PAX’S GREAT UNSINKABLE BIRD by J.R. Potter: When a brilliant scientist falls prey to sky pirates who are after his flying machine, he must rely on his greatest achievement: a teenage girl whom he rescued from certain death.

SEVEN-YEAR ITCH by Rie Sheridan Rose: Toby Kincaid knew his clothes would grow filthy when he made a deal with the Devil, but he didn’t count on the wear to his spirit. He may win the wager but still lose his soul.

THE JOURNEY OF INSPECTOR ROUX by C. R. Simper: A legendary investigator goes down in flames and believes his life is over, until an eager young recruit drags him around the world in pursuit of a kidnapper.

PRIORITY PASSAGE by S. D. Simper: Marina will not allow the death of her father stand in the way of their dreams, but when her airship is boarded by sky pirates, she must decide what she values most: Nikita’s inventions or his daughter.

GANESH by Scott E. Tarbet: A farm boy abducted by a traveling-show huckster finds his calling as an airship pilot, never suspecting the transformative adventure awaiting him halfway around the world. An A Midsummer Night’s Steampunk expansion.

Another great Steampunk book, this time a novel by Rie, is The Marvelous Mechanical Man(A Conn-Mann Adventure) The cover of this great book will get you into the mood to read it for sure. It is with the other covers at the bottom.

Book Description

July 7, 2013
Josephine Mann is down to her last two dollars when she bumps into Professor Alistair Conn. The professor is in need of a lab assistant, and Jo desperately needs a job. Obviously, it's the Hand of Fate.

Professor Conn has created a wonder--a 9-foot-tall automaton Jo dubs Phaeton. When an evil villain steals the marvelous mechanical man, Jo and Alistair track him down and get Phaeton back. Unfortunately, it's a given the evil Bessant won't give up without a fight, and Jo's longing for adventure suddenly becomes much too real...and deadly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Adventure! July 9, 2013
Format:Paperback
Our intrepid heroine, Jo(sephine) Mann, a resourceful Irish orphan with few job options and an adorable, scene-stealing cat, charms Professor Alistair Conn into taking her on as a laboratory assistant. The poor professor is in dire need of assistance, as Miss Mann finds. His laboratory is a disheveled mess. On the surface, Professor Conn seems to be a sweet, absent-minded scientist. In fact, he has hidden levels of badassery, which are a joy to discover. In her quest to organize her new employer's workspace, the dime-novel-devouring Miss Mann discovers the titular marvel. Unfortunately, the mechanical man disappears shortly thereafter, plunging the two into intrigue and steam-powered adventure. There are incredible gadgets, like an airship, a steam car, something that is essentially a motorcycle, and of course the mechanical man himself.
This book wasn't perfect. It seems that the characters are the luckiest characters around. Professor Conn has a family member to assist with any problem that might arise and Jo has the good fortune to fall out of an airship almost on top of the only person in the wilderness who could possibly assist her. My complaint is that the book isn't long enough for the characters to truly struggle, and I would like to see them fighting their way out of bad situations even more than they already do. You know the book is pretty good when the complaint is that it isn't long enough!
There's also a nifty narrative device employed here. Each short chapter begins with an excerpt from a dime novel that relates to the conflict in the chapter. I really enjoyed this; it was like getting two stories for the price of one. I hope Rie Sheridan Rose goes even further with this neat concept in the sequel! Wouldn't it be terrific for Jo Mann to meet Calico Kate (the rancher whose troubles precede each chapter)?
I give The Marvelous Mechanical Man four gears out of five. I highly recommend this one. You will have a great time reading it!
