"Stay unique and true to yourself...don't let others tell you who or what to be!" Lauren Curtis

"Behind every fear there's a wish!"

Lauren Curtis is my Woman In Horror today! Lauren is one fantastic artist. I particularly love her Steampunk. Not only her art, but her writings as well. Okay, you say, what does Steampunk have to do with horror? Isn't it merely a Jules Verne up, up, and away type of thing that involves steam engines and weird clothing? Partly, perhaps, but Steampunk also has room for Zombies, post apocalyptic horrors administered by ruthless purveyors of humanity, Wild West Gothic terrors, and a whole other array of monstrous deviates tossed out in front of us. I love the science fiction/fantasy aspects of  the genre, and the alternate history phenomenons.

I have been inspired on a number of occasions to write horror tales based on Lauren's great art. She was surprised, to say the least, about what her art said to me. But, then again, is not art in the eye and mind of the beholder?  Her Steampunk art reaches out to me as well, and I will add to add more of the sub-genre to my offerings. I love the good old Western, apocalyptic, alien, multi-verse kind. Oh, yeah. There are plenty of ideas attacking me from all her various art sites and the Amazon books she has. One is only .99. Hint, hint.

I strongly suggest you visit Lauren's many websites I have put in on top of this post. Look at all her great art. You will be impressed.

This is a bio in Lauren's own words:

Lauren Curtis  graduated with a BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, in 1988. She enjoys working in a variety of media, including oils, acrylics, pen & ink, watercolor, Photoshop and photography. Lauren is happiest when creating art that represents her love of nature, wildlife, and spiritual subject matter. The symbology and mythology of ancient cultures such as Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Celtic are fused with the symbols of modern -day, natural spiritual systems, to form a unique and eclectic style. These images are often portrayed through the woman’s perspective, showing the importance of “The Feminine” , which is often over-looked. Lauren wants to convey the beauty in the diversity, as well as the similarities that run through various cultural belief-systems. The artist has also been commissioned for graphic design projects by publishers, musicians, businesses, authors and craft companies.

Lauren has had artwork and poetry published by national magazines, greeting card and crafter companies, as well as historical organizations, including the Middlesex County Cultural & Heritage Commission. She has participated in over 95 solo, group and juried exhibitions, including a solo show at Johnson & Johnson World Headquarters (2009). The artist is a member of several NJ Arts organizations, has been featured on TV shows & radio interviews, and her work has been sold throughout the US and abroad. Her artwork can currently be seen in many venues in NJ, NY, MA and PA.

Steampunk Landing Gazette by Elmo Adams and Lauren Curtis (Nov 11, 2011) - Kindle eBook

 Book Description

November 11, 2011
"Steampunk" refers to a literary genre. A genre is a category. There have been many such categories in the past and there will continue to be more in the future. A recent and ongoing genre is the Goth. Goth is concerned with all that is dark; all that is "Black" shall we say, in a literary and fashion sense, not a racial one.

An old joke suggests that Steampunk the Genre happened with Goth's discovered "Brown." If not abundant humor in the joke, there is some truth. Truth is there in the sense that more can be included in "Black and Brown" than "Black" alone.

And a major descriptor of Steampunk is that it is inclusive. It is a Big tent. It is not just about literature. It is about a lifestyle. Steampunk has something to say about many elements of "Lifestyle."

These elements of lifestyle include but are not limited to: literature, fashion, culinary, decor, humor, philosophy, invention, events, film, and music.

The Steampunk Landing Gazette is concerned with each and all of these elements and will address all in an entertaining manner. That is the goal. Join us and see if we attain the goal. Perhaps you can even participate in the attaining.

Edition 2 has been tuned up to look better on you Kindle Reader
5.0 out of 5 stars Steampunk Fans Should Love This February 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that imagines fantastic machines powered by 19th century technology. Remember that giant spider from that otherwise forgettable Will Smith movie Wild Wild West? That's steampunk. For me the starting point for steampunk is the machines but it delves into other areas as well, such as fashion and attitudes. This kindle book is really a first edition of a little magazine that deals with the world of steampunk. As such it is really an introduction to this world. If you already have an interest in steampunk you'll love it. If you're curious about steampunk you'll probably learn something and will enjoy it. I suspect this book has a smaller potential audience than most books, but for those interested in this genre there is some good stuff here.

FOUR by Elmo Adams and Lauren Curtis (Aug 11, 2012) - Kindle eBook

Book Description

August 11, 2012
Four Ships came from their planet - the fourth one in distance from their double - star.

Some of them looked much like us. They could speak like us - most Earth languages. They wanted to live among us, but only for a while. But even that they had had not done much of. The mostly stayed in orbit and observed or made small explorations to remote areas.

But one afternoon, a freak storm changed all that. First two students helped one of them and then two teachers joined to do the same.

But the bigger story is how they would help us.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hope for our planet and a visitor from far, far away. January 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Four is a hopeful look at extraterrestrials and their contact with two young people in Central Florida, The kids realistically request help from two sympathetic teachers in working with our visiting friend to thwart some Middleastern Bad guys. This is a great read for Middle School on up. It mixes adventure, politics, and the realityof today's latch key kids in a very accessible manner. As an added bonus, if you live in Central Florida it's a hoot figuring out where the places mentioned in the book are actually located. (Names have been changed to protect innocent landmarks.)
