Laura J. Hickman is my Woman In Horror today! Laura and I are co-authors in fifty shades of decay, a zombie erotica book published by Angelic Knight Press. This is quite an interesting tome, with stories of all kinds of zombies, love, horror, and, of course, erotica. Some of these tales, as you might imagine, are pretty wild and free-swinging. Others are even romantic, in a rather grotesque way you might say. Out With A Bang, Laura's story, has been well received by a number of reviewers. While she does not perceive herself as being a zombie writer, preferring to write about the evils man manifests upon man, she did a great job.

A review of Out With A Bang by Jake Elliot:

‘Out with a Bang’ by Laura J. Hickman was about a sex-addicted Goth girl who fed her mom to the zombies so as to stop her nagging. Once the batteries of her ‘boyfriend’ ran dry, she devises a new plan to get off, a final plan. I loved the voice of this story.

Laura has moved around a lot, having lived in Louisiana, Las Vegas, and now Rhode Island. That means she has been able to draw upon experiences and different people for fodder for her tales. she started coming up with stories at the tender age of two and three. Of course, her parents were the recipients of her stories where they, unfortunately, were cast in a dark light at times. She writes often of lost and broken love and how her characters must fight their way through it.

Laura and I have the same approach to writing. We take hold of an idea and run with out. Sweet! I love that method. I believe it produces a fresh approach to a tale and keeps the flow moving, while providing suspense along the way. If an author's not exactly sure what is going to happen with a story, then the reader will be surprised as well.

Laura's Bio:

Laura J. Hickman spends her life writing and creating new worlds.  She has recently moved to the New England area, but spent the majority of her life in both New Orleans and Las Vegas.  She has had stories published in numerous places, including Necon E-books, Pill Hill Press and 6 Sentences.
Her time spent in numerous places has helped her writing grow and has found inspiration in everything from the Florida Beaches, to the haunted streets of the French Quarter to the sin filled casinos of Las Vegas.  She has found help with some great readers and a wonderful editor.  Laura feels like with the correct support from friends, family and a great editor her writing has improved so much and is still pushing for her goals to be accomplished.

Obviously, Laura J. Hickman is a Woman In Horror!

4.0 out of 5 stars A myriad of stories!, March 15, 2013
This review is from: Fifty Shades of Decay (Kindle Edition)
First, I want to reiterate, this book is rated MA for a reason. This is not a book for the squeamish either! With fifty-one different authors, there is plenty of variety in this collection. And while some were able to gross out the best of 'em, (me), there were others that ... dare I say ... touched me with sincerity and possibly a bit of romanticism. And then there were others that were just plain hot. :)

If you enjoy zombies, and can handle a fair amount of guts, gore and ... other parts ... then I suggest a read. With fifty-one stories, there's bound to be a couple for everyone's taste!

Brown, Adam Byatt, Bolton Carley, Jeanette Cheezum, Ian Chung, Elliott Cox, Sandra Davies, Paul de Denus, Kathleen Gabriel, Joseph Grant, Mike Handley, Kip Hanson, Nicole E. First of all, there is the online website, 6S, which stands for Six Sentences. And not only are there several published authors who post ongoing creative short shorts there, but a host of creative chats to add and be inspired by. Originated by one of the most creative people I know, Rob McEvily, there are several different contests and challenges for the 6S community of writers.
This book, Mind Games, was chosen democratically by 6S voters, as the topic for the latest 6S challenge: write a six sentence story with the theme called Mind Games. Over 300 different authors submitted work, and the final book has 40 or more stories edited by Thomas Knox, who did a fine job.
I recommend this anthology as one filled with great intrigue, depth, and a fresh perspective on how diverse one theme, MIND GAMES, can be. It's also fast paced, funny, witty and fresh! The fastest growing market currently in America, flash fiction or micro fiction is full of inspiration.

The versatility of the vampire myth from a story-telling standpoint is really mind-blowing and on full display in this book. I heard about this short story collection from Jennifer Chambers, author of Undead Ladies Who Lunch, when we met at the Southern Oregon Author and Book Fair. Chambers' story is very short and very clever. I love vampire characters who move confidently in the modern world and make us think twice about our everyday activities, in this case, the Macy's makeup counter. Pattison's story about Van Helsing as divorce lawyer surprised me and his Vamp is delicious. And Lee's story, which opens the collection, delivers a robust Anne Rice patina that made me surprisingly nostalgic for the genuine period gothic tradition. Al in all, a solid collection and makes for great airplane, poolside or late-night easy reading.

Who Is the Mysterious Dr. Ramsey? By Michael Brown on July 3, 2010

Format: Paperback
Rob McEvily started up Six Sentences in September of 2006. Many fine writers took to the format and submitted pieces for him to review and post on his site. He now has presented over 2,950 six-sentenced gems. At the end of 2009 he began posting one piece each day, otherwise, that number might be significantly higher. Flash writers, have no fear! Rob set up the 6S Social Network on Ning in April of 2008 as another outlet for writers enamored of the short short form to get in their licks, and what a success that has turned out to be. The 6S Social Network recently celebrated its 10,000th post. Not bad in just a little over two years, eh?
Every so often, Rob sets up a challenge to write on a theme, or prompted by a graphic, and The Mysterious Dr. Ramsey, a collection of 82 fictions by 80 different writers is the result of one of his latest challenges, and what a superb collection it is. I'm not just saying that because I have been graced with a page in the book, nor because so many of the friends I have made on the network appear along with me. This is a truly outstanding collection, presenting as many different takes on the photo prompt of a mysterious woman and the name Dr. Ramsey as there are stories. Each one is unique and of a high caliber of writing.
Dr. Ramsey sometimes appears in these stories as a male, sometimes as a female, and sometimes the doctor is merely incidental to the tale, or is something other than human. Eighty writers let their imagination run wild, and reading through their work, you will rarely be disappointed. There is some nuance to every piece that lifts it out of the ordinary.
Some names you may not be familiar with yet, but soon should be: Bob Clay, Sal Buttaci, Paul de Denus, Peter McNiff, Bill Lapham, JM Prescott, Grey Johnson, Rod Drake, Gita Smith, Joe Gensle, Nicole E. Hirschi, Teresa Cortez, Jared Culpepper, oh, the list goes on and on. You should buy the book and become familiar with all these writers. It's money well invested as you will find yourself returning again and again to savor your favorites.
If you're a writer, and you enjoy crafting tight little tales, you should look into joining the Six Sentence Social Network. You might find yourself in the next collection. To all readers: There are several 6S collections now in print, and all offer quality flash fiction, but without a doubt The Mysterious Dr. Ramsey is one of the best.
