"Here's to hard writing, sincere writing, writing that scrapes you raw."--Billie Sue Mosiman

Billie Sue Mosiman is my Woman In Horror today! Alabama Girl is Billie Sue's autobiography. At least the first part. There will be more to come. While it certainly details the life of a writer, it tells more about the emotions, heartbreak, and joys that every person shares with their fellow humans. There is something here for everyone.

The Grey Matter is Billie's latest book:

Book Description

April 8, 2014
The mountains of DeKalb County, Alabama were majestic, tranquil, inspiring and isolated. Just the type of place a man like John Grey would choose to call home. A land where he was king of all he surveyed. A land where he could be God himself, if he chose to be. Until those kids moved into the cabin below the ridge.

It had been perfect at first for the four young people. Friends since their broken childhoods, now they stood together at the threshold of adulthood. They were a family by choice, not by nature. When supplies dwindled and society failed, so did the rules of civilization and the mountain closed in. Not all predators walk on four legs.

THE GREY MATTER is a novel of white-hot suspense where life is unpredictable and survival is paramount. Who is a friend and who's the enemy?
Ed Gorman, crime and mystery fiction's bestselling author, says of THE GREY MATTER, "I can honestly say Billie Sue Mosiman is one of the finest horror-suspense writers I've ever read. She has her own take, her own voice and such a broad range of skills I'm in awe of her talent."

Mort Castle, award-winning Stoker author, says, "Billie Sue Mosiman's GREY MATTER's got plot twists you aren't predicting and characters made not of cardboard and cliché but flesh and blood, flaws and dreams—and courage. Above all, GREY MATTER is a story of 'family': It's love and not surname or DNA cell tissue that binds us together to protect and save our own. GREY MATTER is a thriller with brains and heart, just like its author, Billie Sue Mosiman."

The Grey Matter marks Billie Sue Mosiman’s triumphant return to the suspense genre. Over the past few years the author has been working her writing chops in a number of other genres, much to the celebration of her fans. With the release of The Grey Matter, she has come full circle, bringing many of the things she has learned along her journey back to her original stomping grounds. You will still find the razor sharp prose, gut wrenching tension and breakneck pacing she has always been known for, along with a newfound edge that has come from years of honing her craft.

John Grey, the novel’s namesake, is one of the most believable and complex characters Mosiman has ever delivered-and she has a stable of evil to her credit already. In my opinion The Grey Matter may well be Mosiman’s finest work to date. A rich, full tale that brings you along willingly, and just when you know where you are going, takes a sharp left turn.

For my entertainment dollar, Billie Sue Mosiman is still the Queen of Suspense. Long may she reign.

This certainly is one super book, my friends!

One of the posts on Billie Sue's blog  http://peculiarwriter.blogspot.com/2014/01/eventually-everyone-suffers.html
is one of particular interest to any fan of Billie Sue's, and also to her friends. I will say nothing more about it here, for she says it the way it should be said. Please read it. Also read her other posts. They are all gems of wisdom from a grand lady of horror and suspense.

Amazon bio:

Author of more than 60 books on Amazon, I am a thriller, suspense, and horror novelist, a short fiction writer, and a lover of words. In a diary when I was thirteen years old I wrote, "I want to grow up to be a writer." It seems that was always my course. My books have been published since 1984 and two of them received an Edgar Award Nomination for best novel and a Bram Stoker Award Nomination for most superior novel. I have been a regular contributor to a myriad of anthologies and magazines, with more than 160 short stories published. My work has been in such diverse publications as Horror Show Magazine and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. I taught writing for Writer's Digest and for AOL online, and gave writing workshops locally in Texas. I was an assistant editor at a Houston literary magazine and co-edited several trade paperback anthologies with Martin Greenberg. My latest work in paperback and Kindle digital is SINISTER-Tales of Dread, a compilation of fourteen new short stories all written in 2013.
Recently I've sold short stories to JAMAIS VU, the premier magazine, and the anthologies BETTER WEIRD edited by Paul F. Olson from Cemetery Dance, ALLEGORIES OF THE TAROT edited by Annetta Ribken, FRESH FEAR edited by William Cook, WRAPPED IN RED edited by Jennifer Greene, and SOMEONE WICKED edited by Weldon Burge. My latest suspense novel, THE GREY MATTER, was published by Post Mortem Press in April 2014.
I was born in Alabama and live now in Texas on a small ranch.
My work has been predominately suspense thrillers, with my short fiction being more speculative. My latest novel is BANISHED, a dark fantasy horror novel involving fallen angels.
I love to read (especially on my Kindle), watch old movies, take photographs, and travel.
Because of my love of storytelling, I've been fortunate enough to make a lifelong investment in writing stories and novels.

Below are two book reviews I wrote for a couple of Billie Sue's great books. Obviously, I loved them both. Her style is horrific, yet it is a more subtle blend of weaving psychological and physical terrors and cementing them in such a manner as to make a lasting impression. Prison Planet for example is a very realistic tale. I could see it actually happening, and even though I read it a while back, I think about it often when seeing events as they are happening in the world at the present time. Read it and see if you don't agree with me.

Also, you will be amazed at the sheer number of books and short stories Billie Sue has written. Wow! There is much to enjoy. Wrap your head around one of her super stories.

Billie Sue Mosiman is one great Woman In Horror!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prison Planet Will Imprison Your Mind!, July 9, 2012
This review is from: PRISON PLANET (Kindle Edition)
Prison Planet by Billie Sue Mosiman is not only a great horror tale, it is a great visionary peek into what I see is happening in the world at the present time. This wonderful gut-wrenching story is the 2012 version of 1984. Take a look around you: political gatherings where members applaud when a speakers says if someone doesn't have the proper insurance, then they should just die. This tale of Billie Sue Mosiman extols the worse form of greed and power-mongering. This IS the story of the 99% and the 1%. Don't take my word for it. Buy and read this story and see if you don't agree with me. I am a huge fan of Billie Sue Mosiman's writing, and this is one of her finest. Read this tale and think. I did!

This review is from: CARNIVAL FREAK (Kindle Edition)
The carnival crowd was happy, yet there was more: but only for the special few. Five brave souls paid another admission to see the freak to end all freaks. Good for the carnival; not so good for the patrons. Carnival Freak by Bram Stoker nominated author Billie Sue Mosiman is one eerie tale of horror sure to grab at goose bump central. Read it before bed, but not if you're alone. Just warning you. Hee, hee!

ALABAMA GIRL-Memoir of a Writer-Part 1 by Billie Sue Mosiman (Jan 3, 2013)

Book Description

January 3, 2013
"Billie Sue Mosiman is a talented fiction writer. Needless to say, her talent shines through in her memoir as well." Hobbs End Reviews

"You will laugh with her, you will cry with her. And you'll come
away knowing a bit more about what motivated her stories and maybe even
take away a deeper meaning to your own life." Kat Yares, Vine Voice

This is eleven chapters and over 50,000 words of the autobiography of Billie Sue Mosiman, author of more than 50 books and an Edgar and Stoker Nominee. She had 13 novels and more than 150 short stories published by major traditional publishers. Since then she's had a new novel and several stories and novellas published digitally.

Born in Alabama, she was shared back and forth between her maternal grandparents and her mother. She lived all over the South but was never more comfortable and happy than when she was at "home" in Alabama with her grandparents. Her mother suffered mental illness, though it was undiagnosed most of her life. Observing the chaotic life when with her parents and the loving embrace once she was again with her grandparents, she began to study the behavior of those around her and delve into what made them do the things they did. Now, after a lifetime of writing and publishing fiction, both novels and stories, she has begun her autobiography. It's not just for writers interested in a writer's life. It's for everyone. This autobiography aims to look back on a peculiar life and write about it using novelistic elements. This is the novel of a life...

Billie Sue Mosiman is a talented fiction writer. Needless to say, her talent shines through in her memoir as well. I have followed her blog, reading each installment the day it is posted. I feel I know the characters, Bigmama and Bigdaddy are life-like and their personalities shine through the words. There are funny moments, like when young Billie Sue was almost eaten my turkeys, heartbreaking moments, the grisly murder of her aunt and uncle, and terrifying moments, like when Billie's Mama left her and her little brother alone for three days with only $20. I could see that little girl, curled into a ball with a butcher knife clutched in her hand, and I was scared for her. This is the talent of Billie Sue Mosiman.

The memoir shows what truly shaped Billie Sue Mosiman into the woman and writer she is today. She was a curious child, wondering what made people tick, what drove people to do the things they did. And this came out in her writing. If you are a writer, read the latest installment on her blog--the chapter entitled THE MAKING OF A WRITER. I think all writers should be able to relate, and maybe find a little inspiration there, too.

Thank you for sharing your life with your readers, Ms. Mosiman. Well done.
