Bertena Varney is my Woman In Horror today! Bertena has so much going on it's difficult to figure out where to start first. She is an author of not only Vampire fiction horror, but she also writes of non-fiction Vampires. What, you say? Vampires are real? Pull up a chair and read what The Vampire Professor, Bertena Varney MA has to tell you in a description of her fantastic book Lure Of The Vampire:

"Do you ever wonder where vampires come from? Why women love those hot sexy vampires on television or in books? Why vampires are no longer scary to kids? These and other questions are answered within. Lure of the Vampire is a pop culture reference book that begins with the history and mythology of vampires and ends with interviews of modern living vampires. The author has provided "fun" lists like the Powers of Dracula, Real Live Vampire Murders, Television Shows and African Americans who have played vampires. There are also websites in each section that show the most popular vampire books and even children's shows and books. But, there is a personal twist when it comes to Lure of the Vampire. The author has provided personal essays from national and international vampire authors as well as her own. They range from a personal look at vampires in mythology to the romantic lust filled vampire. There are also interviews with various groups and individuals involved in the vampire community. Lure of the Vampire: A Pop Culture Reference Book of Lists, Websites, and "Very Telling" Personal Essays is a perfect quick to grab reference book for the vampire fan or author. It is concise enough to assist you in finding links to what you are looking for without our being too cumbersome and confusing."

5.0 out of 5 stars Bertena's Lure of a Vampire October 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Lure of the Vampire by Bertena Varney, MA was a very interesting and informative novella. In her short book she wrote in depth titled chapters ranging from Vampires in History, Vampires in Literature, Vampires in Film, Vampires on TV, Vampires for Children and Vampires in Real Life, just to name a few. She offered special guest interviews with fellow authors and persons to add emphasis to the articles along with plenty of wonderful websites to keep you busy for awhile.
In her Religion section, she explained that Religious beliefs are that the drinking of blood by a vampire is a "sin" and can be proven in the Old Testament. They site such stories as Lilith, Cain and Judas to back up this "sin" they believe. In her Children section, she reminds us that the vampire on Sesame Street have been around a long time. She examined how children are introduced to vampires at an early age with Count Chocolate Cereal, Halloween gummies and costumes; there are many other TV shows (like Count Duckula and My Babysitter Is a Vampire) and books for children that cover the subject matter of vampires. She has included a rather extensive list of movies and TV shows that has involved vampires and has also included a list of all the actors that have played Dracula over the years. She examined the vampire's role on young adults. She believes that vampires provide an outlet for them to experiment, make friends and develop, finding safety, stability and acceptance along the way. This was very interesting and I guess even as an adult, as I read about vampires, I find the same thing. Her section on Recreation discussed the plentiful websites dedicated to vampires, vampire role-playing games and plain old video games.
Her Real Life section is the one that I found particularly interesting. She spoke about the different kinds of vampires and the man that is on the cover of her book. She included an interview with him as well. I had always thought, as a child, that there was only one kind of vampire, the Sanguarians who required the drinking of blood. As I got older and started to research vampires, I found the Paranic/Energy/Psychic vampires that feed off the energy a person emits naturally. Her book explained that in addition to these two kinds of vampires, there is a Tantric/Sexual vampire, a lifestyle vampire that dresses up and is just into all things vampire, and then there is an Elemental vampire. What is an Elemental vampire? I wondered the same thing. She explains it as one that feeds off natural phenomenon like lightening, natural disasters, etc. She educated me and I love to learn new things! She examined the man on the cover, who is known as Vlad the Gothic Magician. He is a living vampire who understands the concept of blood and energy. He is also a Magician and performs regularly but not to children's birthday parties only. He has an older clientele for the most part due to his subject matter. He agreed to be on the cover of her book and the rest was history.
Bertena states that the vampire phenomenon has risen 75% recently and there is a call for anything and everything vampire related. She believes the vampire rage, "Represents what we fear most at that moment" and that's why it's so popular. She cautions that when dealing with vampires, "Not all things are what they appear". She has a wide variety of interests but she always comes back to vampires as her favorite. She started this book as a paper for her Masters course. Since then, after much research, she has turned it into a book worth reading for any vampire and newbie vampire lover. Bertena has big plans for this fall as she will be teaching a vampireologist course. You can reach her at:

I really enjoyed this book, though that's not surprising as I love vampires. She reiterated some things I already knew, explained some things' origins and practices that I also knew, and educated me on several new aspects of her book as well. She was very thorough and not only told you something but added examples to emphasize her point. The wealth of her knowledge is unparalleled. I usually start a book and put it down to come back to it later. Once I started reading her book, I couldn't put it down and was distressed when I had to do so to perform everyday tasks. Luckily, it was a quick and easy read. It really engulfed me, drew me into the book as I read. I commend her for such a comprehensive and wonderful book. I'm glad I took the time to read it as I was thoroughly entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid anthology of "risque" vampire stories: 4.5 stars November 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Vampires: Romance to Rippers. An Anthology of Risque Stories" is, self-explanatory, a collection of "risque" vampire stories. A couple of the pieces stand out:

"The Making of Marea" by Scarlette D'Noire is a short story that describes a "making" of a vampire. Sounds like we've read this before, right? Well, here's the thing: as long as these stories are freshly told, have unexpected plot twists, and craftfully written, we'll be chasing the high again and again. The story is set in a plantation, where Marea, an ex-slave girl, is an object of desire of both the Master, and Delano, the vampire. Delano turns Marea, hoping to bind her to him. Sounds simple, but it isn't. Marea is not a "simple" girl, not a plaything to those who have more power. Read on to find some nice plot twists and get yourself surprised. It's a very neatly constructed story set in the vampire lore.

Charity Parkerson's "Double the Sin" is a short story that is an interlude for her "Sinner's" series of novels. It tells the tale of a love that was almost lost, found again, and the protagonists reunited. In a very steamy action, that should come with a medical warning, I might add. Ms. Parkerson's short stories are usually the pick of the bunch. It seems that it doesn't matter what she writes: erotica, romance, etc., she handles the format extremely well. She could probably write a recipe book and we'll be talking about the story structure and trying to find the hidden allegories in it as we write our reviews. Good stuff, as usual.

The rest of the stories are pretty good as well, competently written, and will appeal to the broad vampire-loving audience. Check out "Hot Dark Comfort" and "My Vampire Lover."

The book starts with prefaces that give us a "behind-the-scenes" glimpse into the evolution of "vampire" in literature, especially in romance.

Altogether, a solid anthology. 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start to (hopefully) a new series! January 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Lillian is exactly what I would expect from author Elizabeth Loraine...downright great storytelling that leaves you yearning for more! I certainly hope Ms. Loraine will consider expanding this to a full novel and perhaps even a series. Her Royal Blood Chronicle series and the new Phantom Lives series have shown her to be a gifted storyteller. Her characters are clearly defined and her descriptive writing takes you fully into whatever world she wants to take you into, every time. Keep up the awesome work, Elizabeth! Your fans want more, more, MORE!
