Joann H. Buchanan is my Woman In Horror today! And what a woman she is! I am going to do something I don't do. This Woman In Horror post will start out with a review I wrote for Joann a couple years ago for her great book I Am Wolf.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Am Wolf Howls With Wonder January 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
My reading tastes are rather eclectic, and while this story is YA(a genre that normally I wouldn't search out), I found this to be a very good book. Why? The story line is wonderful and easy to follow, but that doesn't mean it's boring. Excitement comes at you from everywhere. There is one main protagonist: a young High School boy who is coming to terms with some huge changes in his life. However, this young boy has so many friends as he struggles to fit in with his new existence that there is a veritable cast of supporting heroes.

Where this story really shines, however, is within the twisted mind of the antagonist. Joann does a marvelous job of plotting out his depravity, making you wonder just what this evil entity will do next. He does plenty! None of it good.

Countering his evil is the love and compassion shown by the young lad and his friends, but don't confuse their caring for weakness: they have a tough job to do and they get it done; at much risk to themselves.

Enter another reason I love this novel: while the name of this tale would make you believe it is a Werewolf story, it is not. It is a tale of legends and lore where Native Americans are part of something grandiose, something a part of Spiritual transcendence. Many American Indian cultures believe in shape-shifting. Some believe it to be evil. Others believe it to be otherwise when used within the context of what the Great Spirit wishes: harmony between humans and nature. My grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee lady. This makes me one fourth Cherokee. That part of me embraces the old ways, and I understand the concepts and beliefs of my ancestors. What I am getting to here is the fact Joann has done a fantastic job of making the old legends seem real. This is not always an easy task in today's day and age where everybody "knows" everything. Maybe we're not as smart as we think we are.

It's time for me to rate this book. One star for a great story line; another star for super protagonists; TWO stars for an amazing portrayal of evil within the antagonist; and another star for creating such wonderful believability of Spiritual transcendence.

FIVE BLAZING STARS!

I'm sure I have everyone's attention now. As you can tell, I love this book. I have known Joan for quite some time now and she has never failed to amaze me. Back in the days when she had an online radio show, I wrote a number of short stories and poems which she read on air. I loved her show. It was a highlight of my week. Many great authors and celebrities lent stories, poems, and entertainment savvy to her show. There was great music and even hi-jinks from her young children. One day I wrote a story which was rather extreme. She hadn't read through it before air time and was afraid of the consequences, but she bellied up to the bar and told the world that no restrictions were going to be placed on her show. I have never forgotten that. She has guts. Would I have been upset had she not read it? Of course not. I am known for some of my way out there stories. I write what I want and let the chips fall where they may. Joann did the same thing that day, and her audience was in our corner. Free speech survived, and a huge respect for this talented lady overcame me.

The Children Of The Nox series is superb! We have changelings; demons; The Goddess Of The Night, Nox; Trinity, a sprite ; the Fates, Past, Present, and Future; and more. This is super fantasy, horror, and tales delving into the spiritual world. It has it all.

Soulless Light is a completely different story, one of revenge from beyond the grave. This is a short, exciting read. Don't miss it.

The Hunter is Joann's newest book. Think Vampires, Hunters, and a mission to administer payback for evil foisted upon young Carly.

Like me, Joann was influenced by stories told around campfires. A Native American man on a local Reservation spun tales that stuck in her consciousness. She turned this love of vocal story-telling to that of transference to the written word. She learned her lessons well.

I end this tribute to my friend by saying there is more to come from Joann very soon. It is too early to divulge the particulars, but I am very excited about it! Stay tuned to this blog for updates as they come.

So, good people, I say without a doubt that Joann H. Buchanan is a Woman In Horror!

I have been through a lot in my life. There have been good times and well, not so good times. I have learned that a lot of the old adages are true. Good things come to those who wait. You catch more flies with honey. Laughter is the best medicine and it takes at least three good licks and a bite to get to the center of a tootsie pop...lol...I love reading, writing and having fun with my family. For me, creativity is the key to life and finding that balance that we all want to attain.

I can't wait to hear from you.

Joann H. Buchanan's second book in the Children of Nox Series carries the story forward from where her devastating debut I Am Wolf leaves off. Having successfully fought off the evil Ralph in I Am Wolf, changelings Alaynee and Jonah are now getting ready for prom night and also getting ready to make the lifelong love commitment to each other that wolves do.

The story gets rolling when Alaynee's mother finds a naked teenaged girl hiding in a bush. Following her maternal instinct, she brings the girl home and takes her in, asking Alaynee to share her room. Only problem is, we know from the start that this girl is up to no good. This simple premise, following many harrowing twists and turns in the lives of Alynee, Jonah, Daniel and their friends, carries us through the story. I felt eerily reminded of Stephen King's Carrie - the high school setting, people ignoring their instincts, the instincts that protect them from evil, till it's too late ...

In The Kiss we spend much of our time with supernatural characters, like the evil demon, Ash, Goddess of the Night, Nox, a sprite named Trinity, the trio of Fates, Past, Present and Future, and others. They become "real" characters too, vested with skillfully wrought dialogue all through the book. Fantasy-world fans will gorge on doses of the different rules that apply in their world. Sometimes we are in someone's dream, and sometimes we are back on solid ground. Wherever we are, the rules of engagement are clear. Through glorious descriptions that make it all frightfully real, and dialogue that crackles, Joann Buchanan propels these characters into world-changing battles.

Don't miss The Kiss. There is an enormous frothing sea of glorious creation going on in this book. The sentences seem to roll right off Buchanan's pen, like the best writers in the southern tradition. Paced and structured flawlessly, there is a broad canvas of images and characters and situations here that grabs you and entertains and won't let go. Bottom line, after book 1, I Am Wolf, now comes another mind-blowing read called The Kiss from word-spinner Joann H. Buchanan. This author is definitely one to watch.

From the Author

This book would never have been written if it weren't for the unending support from my fiance' John Buchanan. There is nothing greater in the world than having the support from those you love.
When I was a kid, my parents would take us to the La Jolla Native American Reservation to go camping and tubing down the river. On that Reservation there was a man, (and I'm sorry I can't remember his name because he was one of the inspirations for this novel) he would sit around a giant campfire and tell stories. Some of them were about their folklore and others were about their heritage. I was always lost in a trance when I listened to him. It was without a doubt one of the elements that made me want to write.
I mean imagine being able to send people into another world with just the simple use of words. How wonderful that would be. I would like to say thank you to the man who loved to tell stories around the campfire there. Thank you for being a part of the reason I love writing today. Thank you for allowing me to sit and listen to the worlds you created while the stars were out. Thank you for the whisper and crackle of the fire, but most of all, thank you for sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling suspense October 19, 2011
Format:Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed Soulless Light from beginning to end! Joann Buchanan did a fantastic job; not only in storytelling, but in the development of her characters. I really liked the way she depicted an accurate (in my opinion) description of the villian in this story, the Templar Knights; who wreak havock and destroy lives in the name of "their God."

Although I cannot say that "Good triumps over evil" in this story- it doesn't need to! I find myself forming a bond with Julia, as she serves up revenge, justice and then some!My only complaint is that I wanted more! Though the story was complete, I was sad to see it end.

I whole heartedly give this book 5 stars on every level. I highly recommend Soulless Light to all lovers of paranormal fiction and I cannot wait to see what Mrs. Buchanan writes next
