LISA MCCOURT HOLLAR - WOMAN IN HORROR!

"That's a myth." It's a catch all. Whenever someone in the house says they can't do something... "That's a myth." Lisa McCourt Hollar

Lisa McCourt Hollar is my Woman In Horror today! I've known Lisa for some time now. She is not only a wonderful writer of horror tales, some even geared for children, but she is a wonderful mother and tireless crusader for other authors. She is one of only a handful of authors to be in all three Satan's Toybox  anthologies put out by Angelic Knight Press. This is no small accomplishment as the competition was fierce.

Lisa is an author who covers all the bases. She is in charge of the children's department at Visionary Press Cooperative. Her brainchild blog can be visited here. http://sitnread.blogspot.com/
She also pens for Visionary Press Cooperative, Angelic Knight Press, and a few other Presses. She also self publishes other stories.

Her next projects include Fallout, the cover art below done so well by the great Rebecca Treadway. She is working on a YA Vampire series titled Marked. Lisa is also re-editing her earlier short stories, starting with The Wall. Next after that will be There's Something About Miss Wicker. Sue Mydliak will be doing the cover art for that one. Then there is Behind Closed Doors, which is a child abuse story. Lisa will donate a portion of the profits to a runaway shelter in Lima, Ohio. Marissa Farrar designed the cover art.

Another accolade is that Lisa is the Visionary Press Cooperative Author Of The Week. http://www.visionarypresscoop.com/2013/02/lisa-mccourt-hollar-visionary-press.html

Below, you will see many books penned by Lisa. She is definitely no slouch when it comes to putting out quality horror for fans of all ages. My personal favorite is Sam, which is a Zombie goldfish tale. I wrote a Zombie tale once that had Zombie cows in it, and Rebecca Treadway said that Sam would kill my cows. Wow! What a mean sucker!

Lisa McCourt Hollar is not only one of my favorite authors, but she is one of my favorite humans as well.

"With New World Order coming to a head, it's best to be paranoid and prepared." Dina Rae

Dina Rae is my Woman In Horror today! I met Dina Rae in a rather interesting manner. I had just completed reading and posting a review for one of  Kathryn Meyer Griffith's - one of my Women In Horror to come - great novels, a Five Star of course, and Dina asked me if I would like to read and review her novel Halo Of The Damned. I agreed to read and review for her and was blown away by this great tale! I have included that review below, as well as one for another one of her tales I reviewed. I was very impressed with her knowledge of the Book of Enoch, as I too have a fascination with the Book. That was the beginning of not only a great friendship but a very reliable author to go to for a great read.

I am currently finishing up her new novel Halo Of The Nephilim. Let me tell you: this is one fantastic story! But then again, I knew it would be.

Dina Rae is always encouraging other horror writers, giving pep talks, kind words about authors' books, and the sort. There is no aloofness to this lady. She is a class act all the way. I find it particularly intriguing that she is a Christian and is still able to write of the Dark. But then again, is there not the Light and the Dark? Dina is able to shake away some of the established precepts saying that a Christian should not believe in the things she believes in. She is able to because she does the research and finds the answers. And one of her biggest sources of information is the Bible. This is not a statement about religion from my pen. The point I wish to make is that it is possible to maintain your beliefs and still think objectively. Dina Rae does that.

Dina is a master at her craft, an inspiration for all writers regardless of gender, and a super lady!

I am going to turn this over to Dina Rae for awhile. I asked for a few interesting tid-bits and she gave me the mother lode. Here she is:

Some possible postings:

Are Angels Really Aliens or Vice Versa?
We’ve all heard about UFO sightings, alien abductions, burnt crop fields, and
cattle mutilations. Roswell, New Mexico and Area 54 are the meccas of American
X-files. Bright discs are seen everywhere around the world. What does the
Bible have to say about extra-terrestrials? Were things so different three
thousand years ago? Or are we just using a different vernacular?
Anyone who has ever picked up the Bible knows the story of Noah and the ark.
God chose him and his family because they were ‘pure’ (Genesis). The question
is pure heart or pure bloodline? Angels mated with women back in those days,
producing a half breed called nephilim. These beings were described as giants
with superhuman powers. Could the nephilim be an old version of modern day
aliens of a mixed race?
Angels and aliens are always described as glowing with light. Ezekiel, an Old
Testament prophet, vividly describes a spaceship in his book. Enoch’s writings
about angels were controversial enough to be edited out of the Bible. More of
his writings were found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. He regularly communicated with
angels and ascended up to Heaven to speak with God on behalf of their
shortcomings. Possible abduction?
Halo of the Damned explores the idea of angels breeding with humans.

Scent Branding: Smart Advertising or Mind Control?
Love the woody smell inside of Abercrombie and Fitch stores? What about the
fig, jasmine, and freesia smell of the Sheraton Hotel chain? These are some of
the examples of scent branding also known as ambient scenting. This marketing
strategy proves to be big business.
Prolitec, a leading scent marketing company, continues to expand by creating
signature scents and air technology that disperses the scent throughout stores,
hotels, and companies. Colleges have caught on to the importance of the field
and offer master degree programs for scent design.
Pascal Gaurin, a leading scent designer, created a scent for Samsung. Surveyed
customers equated the unique smell with excellence and spent 20-30% more time
inspecting the electronics. The owner of Bloom Grocery store in Salisbury, NC,
erected a billboard emitting a charcoal smell on highway, giving hungry drivers
an idea of stopping at their store.

Why is scent branding so popular? Besides more sales, the unique smell causes
the customer to associate certain products with their emotions. The scent stays
deep inside of one’s memory. But how can that be? The Olfactory Bulb (sense of
smell) and Brain’s Limbic system (memory) account for 75% of our emotions.
Therefore, smell is a more powerful sense than sight. Makes scents, right? Ask
any bloodhound or shark what they would rather use. Besides the afore
mentioned, some other giants hopping on the scent branding wagon include Guess,
Credit Suisse, De Beers, Westin, Ashley Furniture, Jimmy Choo, Bloomingdale’s,
Hugo Boss, Lexus, Victoria’s Secrets, Fiat, and Juicy Couture.

Sounds like an effective way to advertise. But is it ethical? In the Bronx,
New York, the Sister Thomas Apartments have been partaking in an experiment
since 2010. Hypothesis that borders on fact claims that smell has the power to
make you feel good and make you feel bad. The tenants that live in the housing
project are the guinea pigs for leading scent designers Bruno Jovanovic
(Abercrombie) and Pascal Gaurin (Samsung). Through observation and statistics
within housing projects they intend to prove that smell will make you happy, and
thus act happy. Sound like mind control?

Besides the controversy, the fragrance industry doesn’t have many standards.
Their secret ingredients could easily contain toxins that are known allergens
and hormone disrupters. Other ingredients that might not be legal to ingest but
legal to breathe in could also be used. No one seems to know. Something smells
funny. Scent branding is used for part of the plot in the soon-to-be released
Halo of the Nephilim.

Do You Know Your Zombies?
With the so-called zombie apocalypse approaching, one must be educated about the
different kinds of zombies before prepping for defense. First, there is the
most common and believable-the human that turns into a zombie because of mental
collapse, disease, infection, and/or radiation. They stagger around dazed and
confused and cause panic to others. Then there is the man-made monster kind or
the kind Hollywood and horror authors like me tend to capitalize on.
Zombie interest continues to fascinate the world. Jeffrey Dahmer drilled holes
then poured acid down his victim’s heads in hopes of creating his own zombie.
His madness didn’t work. Can man make his own zombie? Are these monsters real?
According to Wade Davis, author of The Serpent of the Rainbow, zombies are
real. They are a product of the Voodoo religion. He was originally hired by a
pharmaceutical company to find out about the drugs Voduists used in their death
rituals. He believed that datura also known as zombie’s cucumber was a plant
that could medically make one who ingested it appear to be dead for a certain
length of time. Sounds like the stuff Juliet used to fake her death. Could
Shakespeare known about the magical zombie-making plant?
Datura or sometimes Cimora, a close relative of Datura’s, eventually wears off
but leaves the victim in a state of confusion, highly susceptible to the art of
persuasion. Presto! A zombie slave is at the captor’s disposal. Mr. Davis
didn’t just find his datura flower, but witnessed zombie phenomena as he
immersed himself within the Haitian culture.
Bad Juju is a unique blend of horror, romance, and fantasy. Besides The Serpent
and the Rainbow, I read volumes of other Voodoo material and watched hours of TV
specials. Some of the terms I learned can be found below:
Bokor: A wizard who practices black magic, a zombie maker.
Loa: deity/spirit
Ghede Family: A family of loas known as the spirits of the dead. Three barons
rule the family. Baron Samedi is the loa of resurrection. Baron Kriminel is
the most feared loa associated with cannibalism and souls. He’s honored on The
Day of the Dead. Baron LaCroix is the loa of the dead and sexuality.
Poppet: Voodoo doll
Ti-bon-ange: “little good angel” The part of the soul that represents a
person’s individuality.
Gros-bon-ange: “great good angel” Part of the soul that is collected into a
reservoir of the Cosmos or spirit world.
Baka: Voodoo spirits in animal form.
Loup Garou: werewolf
Djab: a devil
Dessounin: Death ritual that separates the gros-bon-ange from the body.
Bizango Society: Secret society of Vodouists. They have Freemason-like
qualities such as aprons, secret handshakes, oaths, hierarchy, and symbols.
Legend states they change into animals at will. They are known for stealing
black cats and boiling them to death for Voodoo services. They drink each
other’s blood from a human skull chalice.

Here are Dina Rae's great books!

Book Description

July 1, 2012
The Last Degree is a fictionalized account of how Freemasons and other secret societies set up the world for takeover. Ancient writings foretell a ‘Shining One’ who emerges as the world’s prophet. A murder of a Most Worshipful mason resembles a secret oath. A cop gets too close to solving the crime. Paranoid preppers go underground, preparing for war.
Headlines such as the Norway massacre, meltdown of the European Union, unscrupulous media, animal die-offs, Middle Eastern unrest, and U.S. shrinking power make the plot relevant to present day. This book is an ode to Christians, Birthers, 2012ers, Truthers, preppers, and/or other conspiracy junkies who enjoy Dan Brown, Jesse Ventura, Brad Meltzer, Alex Jones, Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. A sequel will soon be available.

A chain of advertising agencies, a new breed of humans, and a fallen angel to worship…

Andel Talistokov is known for his slick advertising agencies across the globe. He is a fallen angel that uses advertising as a weapon for Satan's work. His growing power emboldens him to break several of Hell’s Commandments. Furious with his arrogance, Satan commands him to return to Hell after finding his own replacement. Yezidism, an ancient angel worshiping religion, quietly expands throughout the West. Armaros appears as a guest of honor during their ceremonies. He mates with young women to produce nephilim, a mixed race of humans and angels. They are alone and unprepared for their supernatural power. Joanna Easterhouse, a recovering drug addict, steps out of prison shortly after her mother's fatal accident. She and her sister, Kim, unravel their mother's secretive past. Intrigued, they learn their bloodline is part of a celestial legacy. Both worlds collide. Halo of the Damned is a horrifying tale that weaves research together with suspenseful twists and turns.

This review is from: Halo of the Damned (Paperback)
"Halo Of The Damned" by Dina Rae is a super read! Anyone interested in fallen angels will love this novel. The author did a great job with research, hitting on some of my favorite sources for angel lore. The book of Enoch has always fascinated me, and this great tale draws on the lore, suppositions, and possibilities inherent in this book and other usually discarded tomes. Good for Dina! The way she draws upon the personalities of the protagonists and antagonists is phenomenal as there is somewhat of a thin line between what is good and evil in the book. There are no slack, drawn out passages: everything goes straight ahead with great flow and plenty of action. I eagerly await more great stories from this very talented author!

This review is from: Be Paranoid Be Prepared (Kindle Edition)
I love this little short by Dina Rae! Be Paranoid Be Prepared tells us what to look out for in this world of uncertainty: hinting that perhaps the crap will hit the fan sooner than we wish. The author takes us on a behind the scenes adventure in a strip club gone crazy with great visuals, leading us along a path that James Bond would love to traverse. The way this story starts in the past, combining real life horror with present world conditions makes me want to read the next installment. NOW!

Book Description

Two teens turn to a Voodoo bokor to right a wrong. Their curiosity with the dark arts backfires into obsession.

Lucien Nazaire flees his Haitian homeland and settles in a Wisconsin trailer park filled with elderly tenants. He hires sixteen year old Jake for odd household jobs. The boy proves to be the perfect candidate to pass on his Voodoo legacy.
Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo gives him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school.
Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust.
Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island's reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite and returns in a catatonic state.
Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for adults and mature teens. The plot uses research involving the Voodoo religion.
