Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother's bedside. She's been stricken with something the old-timers call "Milk Sickness."

"My baby boy..." she whispers before dying.

Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire.

When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, "henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose..." Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

From the 1920s-era framing story, to the story of the bitter feud between the Pitamonts and Pitavals, to Bertrand's conception as a result of rape and his destructive effects on the lives of others, the novel is shocking and unsettling in a low-key way. The final events of the book occur during the riots and massacres of the Paris Commune, where Bertrand's handful of murders diminishes into insignificance next to the death of thousands. An excellent, disturbing book where no one is wholly evil, no one is wholly good, and the world is on the verge of chaos.

Deep in the Appalachian Mountains is the quiet, conservative mining town of Willow’s Knot. A lifelong resident and coal miner, closeted Liam O’Shay lives a quiet life with his ailing mother.

Lonely and introverted, Liam begrudgingly agrees to a spontaneous Friday night trip to Morgantown for a weekend getaway. There he meets the enigmatic and equally fascinating Jeremy, and a fast-paced romance begins. As Liam’s romance with Jeremy blossoms, he finds himself not only awakening sexually but also becoming enmeshed in a fantastical journey through Native American folklore, alien agendas, and twisted government conspiracies.

The mystic and the terrifying converge as gruesome owls, sinister wolves, and spiritual totems swirl in battle with Star Beings and reptilian monsters. Liam finds himself on a journey leading down a nightmarish path where the line between dream and reality blurs and where ultimately his true destiny lies.

Follow the final moments before Edgar Allan Poe's mysterious death, journeying through twisted bits and pieces of his musings, both brilliant and mad, in search of the truth behind his final, unfinished work "The Lighthouse," while unraveling the mystery behind the elusive woman desperately seeking the author for answers behind her husband's haunted death.

"Atmospheric, lush, and lyrical, Leigh M. Lane's Finding Poe is a haunting Gothic novel which will delight anyone familiar with the works of Edgar Allan Poe, as well as anyone who enjoys an evocative and classic tale of terror." -horror/mystery author Dana Fredsti.

This month is probably our most eclectic mix of books yet. A classic from the past; a new book from which a great movie is based; a superb anthology of horror addiction tales; and great new selections from DarkMedia City members. I have read all these books except for The Singing Wind by Joshua Skye and am certainly looking forward to reading his great book. I am familiar with his work, and it is very good. Sit back in your armchairs and enjoy August. The Dog Days will be kind to your reading enjoyment.
